Fear not, it is a problem with the SSB MCU not talking to the DAC.  The cure
is to contact Gary and Elecraft will send you a replacement MCU.

I had exactly the same problem.  Albeit I only had to cycle through the
modes back to SSB to restore PTT.  Scary when it happens.

On the subject of SSB.  I have noticed on #1400 that on OPT1 or 2 filters,
if below 21MHz I get a shift in the S-meter calibration when switching from
USB to LSB.

With no antenna and the attenuator switched in, on LSB there are no LED's
lit.  Switch to USB and one LED lights.  On 21MHz and above it is reversed.

This indicates that it only happens with high BFO frequencies.  A quick test
was to put the radio in USB and retune the BFO down to the LSB setting,
problem/feature went away.  I haven't yet tuned the BFO up a bit at a time
to see when the problem/feature returns.

I wonder if anyone else has noticed this?
