Date: Mon, 27 May 2002 20:56:23 -0400 Ron and all, The latest firmware contains a fix for the 'creeping VFO', so for those who do not want to install Builder's Alert 16, upgrading the firmware is an alternative. (this latest version is the one that supports the KPA100 - version 2.02e). 73, Don Wilhelm - Wake Forest, NC W3FPR home page: http://www.qsl.net/w3fpr/ QRP-L # 485 K2 SN 0020 mailto: w3fpr at arrl.net ++++++++++++++++++++ Date: Mon, 29 Apr 2002 13:36:25 -0700 From: Eric Swartz WA6HHQ - Elecraft Organization: Elecraft To: rondec at easystreet.com Cc: Glenn Maclean , elecraft at mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] VFO Drifts during Transmit See: http://www.elecraft.com/Apps/Alert16.html on our builder's resource page. 73, Eric =========== Ron D' Eau Claire wrote: > > >...I was having a CW QSO on 20 meters this afternoon. I've had my K2 on the air since December 1999, and I NEVER experienced the problem of the VFO sliding up the band by itself, so I never did the mod. Not until last night. I was rag chewing with a VE3 on 20 meters when all of a sudden I heard a slight choppiness in my keying...strange, and when I looked at the display I saw the frequency incrementing itself. So that's it, I thought, the dreaded VFO shift. OK, I'm not immune, time to do the mod. I took the K2 to the bench, popped the lid, took out the audio filter, the control board, and finally the front panel. Grumble, grumble. Put in a jumper, put it back together, took it to the operating table and hooked it up again. I turned it on. It was still on the frequency it had drifted to when I lost the VE3, 14024. There was a Greek station calling CQ, so I figured I'd answer him and see if I'd screwed anything else up doing the mod. Greek station? SV2ASP/A...Mount Athos...calling CQ in the clear! Holy &*&*%$! This is one of the rarest DX entities there is on CW! YES! I GOT HIM!!!!!!! I listened for quite a while as an enormous pileup built up. All evidence points to it being Monk Apollo himself, not a pirate. It was one of the most exciting experiences I've had in 46 years of ham radio. Mojo? Are you kidding? The K2 tuned itself to his frequency for me! Maybe I should undo that mod. 73, Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA ++++++++++++++++++ From: "Glenn Maclean" To: Date: Mon, 29 Apr 2002 19:02:24 -0700 Subject: [Elecraft] K2 VFO Drift problem resolved Thanks to all who responded to my K2 drift problem especially Ron AC7AC and Tom N0SS for personally sending me the PDF file for the fix which is now builder alert #16 on the Elecraft web site http://www.elecraft.com My K2 was doing exactly what the alert talks about when I was keying in cw mode the vfo would move up. When I stopped keying the vfo would stay put. When I started keying again the vfo would start moving again. The drift was confrmed by an on the air report and the digits in the display changed as I keyed. The interesting thing is I turned the K2 off and back on again. I rotated the vfo dial and started keying and all was well. Then I changed the vfo and started keying and the drift started again. I have accomplished builder alert #16 and all seems to be well with my K2 again. I have not had the drift problem since accomplishing the mod. Thanks again to all who responded, Glenn WA7SPY +++++++++++++++
