It is a superb program, and I fully intend to register. As a tightwad of the highest order, my recommendations don't come higher than that! The developers seem to have thought of everything (apart from specific support for the K2, but there seems to be a Custom option by which means this might be added.) I modified my PSK data cable, which had a transistor switch inside the D plug shell at the PC end, driven by the DTR, by adding a cable connected to the three pins required by the KIO2 interface cable. It really couldn't be easier. This gives me the best of both worlds, as I can still use programs with no CAT support at all, plus MixW can use the DTR to key the K2 for computer generated CW. (As pointed out, sending CW using the CAT command is not supported. On the plus side, as the radio is keyed normally, it looks possible to create a macro to program the K2's CW memories. Unless it's true what someone said that you have to use a paddle.) A word of warning: remember to configure the K2 to INP HAND when keying it from the program. I had it set for a paddle, and wasted half an hour trying to work out why I could only get the program to send streams of dits. Earlier I posted a message that it appears that MixW 2 works with the K2 with the KIO2 option. Well I have been using it about a week now, and after solving some operator problems (wrong options selected in several menus) I am convinced that it does everything it should in the RTTY, BPSK31, and CW modes. Haven't tried the other 14, yes fourteen, modes (SSTV, HELL, etc, etc...) It even has a fairly adequate logger that will interface with a CD call book - (CD CB not tested yet) Use Kenwood CAT interface - there is only one Kenwood choice. The GUI for the rig is seamless, in that if you select 80 meters CW it puts the K2 on 7040 (which you can change in the Band Plan if you want), in the CW mode. Similar actions occur for BPSK and RTTY. The is a simple "CAT BAR" that you can also use to control frequency, bands, and modes. I have seen several messages on the yahoo mixw message server though about problems with this bar - mine works correctly. The displays, bands, modes, track any changes made by hand on the K2 AND are put into the log for you - minimal cut and paste - only notes or other weird things like two word cities. You will need to set up macros for narrow/wide filters and I also set one up to "align" the received frequency with the transmitted frequency on CW. My interface is a RASCAL (similar to All the rest that have an opto isolator in them for the PTT). It also works for me with the KIO2 cable - BUT NOT FOR CW. For CW I set the K2 in the hand input mode and key the PTT line in the front mike socket where my audio goes into anyway. This program appears to be the BEST I have downloaded and I have downloaded all the ones you can from the WWW. I plan on registering it - its that good. My interface is the RASCAL R-1AL shown on the following web page. And the diagram is on the next webpage. http://www.packetradio.com/psk31.htm http://www.packetradio.com/00rascal/R-1AL.gif The only changes to this interface is that I have added the RXD/TXD signal lines and those lines along with PC signal GND is the input for the K2 KIO2 port. To achieve this a cut a hole in the box provided and put in a DB9 connector. Then only needed a Serial DB(M to DB9F cable to hook the interface box up to the K2. Any interface that is wired like this should work. The drawings above are sufficient to make your own from junk-box parts. I found that for the Audio IN/OUT I had to have the isolation transformers or there was a 60 Hz (power line frequency) buzz with multiple harmonics across the entire waterfall/spectrum. So make sure that you do not have this power line interference if you decide not to use isolation transformers. If you get the kit - I did not wire the kit as they showed in the wringing diagram because they tied the PC signal ground to the radio chassis ground and this would have defeated the filtering that is in the KIO2 input lines. I selected the Kenwood (there is only one choice for Kenwood) and other than operator errors the program is working. Problems I have noted - Will only switch VFO A with the CAT BAR. You can switch VFO B if you make your own macros though. When you select a new mode in MixW the mode of Mix W will change but the mode of the K2 does not change - sometimes. Example - you are using psk31 and switch to CW, the K2 does not always switch to CW. When you switch bands in MixW to a different band the K2 stays in the mode that it was in the last time you used that band. The K2 does go to the proper frequency/band. Both of these minor inconveniences are (fixed) worked around by selecting the band in the CAT BAR a second time. I am not sure, but I think that with the Kenwood, when you select a mode (CW, SSB, LSB, etc) you don't need to select it again when you switch bands - thus the problems identified above. With proper selection of the CommPort and use of the Elecraft KIO2 interface cable (wired as described in the manual) you should be able to "control" the K2. You could plug cables into the PC audio card from the K2 and be on the air (IF you don't have HUM like I did.) I selected PTT via CAT in the TRCVR CAT/PTT configuration panel. I selected CW via RTS in the TRCVR CATT/PTT under the DETAILS button for the ComPort, The other items in this panel should be set up for your comport (Comm 1???) and the protocol as defined in the KIO2 manual. CW needs to key the PTT line (the one in the mike will work IF YOU SELECT HAND INPUT for the key. If you want to use paddles and PC you will need to bring out the isolated signal and tie it to two diodes as shown in the manual. I haven't done or tried this yet as all I have is a straight key and a electronic microprocessor paddles which also needs to use the straight key option. I have found what I think is an excellent compromise approach to PSK31 operation - sort of a have your cake and eat it too. My normal operating bandwidth with the Icom PRo is 3600 Hz. Using the MixW program with its excellent macros, when I see a track that I want to print, I invoke a macro that (1) changes the radio tuning to move the desired track to an audio offset frequency of 1500 Hz which is the center of the PRO SSB filters and then (2) selects a 50 Hz IF DSP filter. The effect can be astounding. The speaker almost immediately goes silent except for the selected station. Since the other, usually stronger stations in the passband can no longer affect the PRO AGC , the effective signal strength of the chosen signal frequently goes from bare visible on the screen to the color denoting an average to strong signal. At the conclusion of such operation, I invoke another macro which retunes the radio to restore the chosen signal to its original offset frequency and selects the original 3600 Hz USB filter. All this is done with pushing either of two macro "radio buttons" on the MixW display. I use a comparable pairof macros for CW operation, the only difference being translation to a 700 Hz offset and the selection of a 100 Hz CW bandpass filter with extremely steep sides. All these capabilities are probably present in other programs that I am unaware of, but the point I want to make is that we can enjoy the luxury of viewing a wide passband in the interests of signal selection and yet very quickly and conveniently restrict the bandwidth the minimum required for PSK31 operation. We have come a long way since those early days when we had to tune so carefully with Peter's original program to center a station in that 500 Hz waterfall! The rig control programs should have a standard API, which the other programs would use to control the rig. This way, you could have one user interface to control the radio, no matter what you wanted to do with it. Logging and data program authors needn't worry about the quirks of different CAT radios: all they would need to do is support the standard control API and their software would work with all radios. With the present situation you can only use one program at a time, since each one takes over the serial port and wants to talk exclusively to the K2, and you have to get used to a different UI for every darn mode. As my idea isn't going to happen, I reckon your best bet is to go with MixW. I just tried the macro and I get nothing after the AR. You might try retyping the last part and get the semicolon right after the + to be sure the macro is terminated. Your earlier asked what the radio setup did. When you define the radio you are setting up the communication and now can read and set freq. etc. If on your configuration screen you set PTT and cw via cat command, you have the basic functions available. The cw command assumes you key via the rs232 via the key jack. If you do that, when you send CW, Mixw translates the characters you type to dit dahs. If you want to take advantage of the KY command in the K2, you send ASCII to the K2 and it translates to dit dahs. Also for other functions you can set up macros using the programming commands. I have sets for different radios which I handle as follows. I make a folder in the MIxw directory and label it with the radio. For instance K2macros , Icommacros, etc. When I develop a set of macros for that radio I copy the file "MixMacros.ini" to the appropriate folder . When I want to change radios, I just copy the MixMacros.ini file from the folder into the main MixW directory. I hope that is reasonably clear. The solution is basically to always use a macro to switch in the narrow filter, (using a CAT command) and to include in this command a MixW command to lock the TX frequency so that it doesn't change when MixW's AFC tracks the frequency change that it sees on the received signal. The macros I use are: Select Narrow (Gray -): Select Wide (Gray +): Center Signal (Gray *): Seek Right (<<): Seek Left (>>): AFC and SNAP are always ON in my configuration (I'm not entirely sure of the difference between AFC and SNAP, so I'm not sure if this is right, but it doesn't seem to do any harm.) In all the macros that change the frequency, you'll notice that as well as unlocking the TX frequency I also select the standard filter again, so as not to inadvertently start receiving another station with a TX/RX frequency offset. I haven't noticed any problems since I started using these macros, but I'd be interested in comments from other MixW users. On a related topic I'd like to pass on a tip I saw in another forum: the program QuickMix from www.msaxon.com. This free program can save mixer settings and restore them from the command line. So you can run it automatically when MixW starts up (using the OnStartMixW macro) and have your mixer settings automatically set to the optimum positions. Happy warbling. -- Julian, G4ILO. And to align, just: You can also combine align with the filter selection command to bring everything to the center frequency of your filters. Mine are all centered on 1500 right now, but I have had them at 1200. I know, it's counter intuitive, but that's the way MixW works. That way you can tune your receive frequency to zero in the other guy, but your transmit frequency does not change. In other words, it is "locked" to its original setting, and can't walk up or down the band. Originally I planned to lock the TX frequency so I could use fine RIT to manually tune in the signal. Then when I tried the macro I realised that the AFC (now affecting receive only, with the TX locked) would do the job of the RIT automatically. This has really solved a major annoyance for me. You do lose a few words while the AFC locks on, but it's better than being forced to use the standard filter all the time. +++++++++++++ To: elecraft at mailman.qth.net From: n4so at juno.com Date: Sun, 15 Dec 2002 16:20:40 EST Subject: [Elecraft] MixW2 software source --from the last Rich Lentz message: MixW2 is a shareware program available at the main Web site: http://www.mixw.net/ www.mixw.net I was informed that the U. Upon starting MixW, occasionally the audio from the K2 goes very low. At first I thought it had gone into transmit, but turning up the volume showed that it was receiving, but weak. The only way to cure this problem if it occurs to change to another band and then back again. This problem doesn't always happen. What does happen most of the time is that my macros for changing the RX filter bandwidths don't work. Neither of these problems have ever occcurred using earlier versions of MixW, and I have reverted to using version 2.06Q. I have a macro OnStartMixW which starts with the following: . The CAT command K22 is necessary to enable the K2 firmware mode that recognises the commands to change filters. Therefore I am diagnosing that MixW 2.06 ZJ is sending garbage to the K2 during this start-up macro, possibly causing a buffer overflow that is upsetting the K2 firmware, causing the occasional receiver weirdness and the failure to respond to filter switch CAT commands. It might be useful if other K2 users could verify this problem with version ZJ, to prove that it isn't my K2 that is at fault, although I don't believe it is since the problem only occurs with the new version of the software. 73, -- Julian, G4ILO. The transistor switch is made up on a tiny bit of perf board and fits inside the D shell on the back of the computer. It uses the spare white (?) wire inside the K2 serial cable to get to the K2. A short bit of thin audio co-ax takes it from the K2's D plug to the key plug on the other side of the K2 back panel, via a couple of diodes, as per the manual. So there's no need for an extra wire from the PC to the rig. The only thing I can't do is plug in an actual key at the same time, but I'm sure I've seen "Y" adapters to allow two people with headphones to listen to a Walkman at the same time, which ought to do the job (probably need two diodes in the key jack plug as well.) I haven't tried doing anything fancy with MixW macros, though I'm always happy to use other people's ideas. After most of a lifetime writing programs and fixing computer problems professionally I find myself increasingly reluctant to do it in my spare time as well. :-) -- Julian, G4ILO.
