Now you should be able to remove the white backing with much less trouble. Hi: A lot of people are complaining about the tape used to hold the green plastic screen on the front panel. Do it slowly, take off one layer, place the tape over the area to cover and press down. Then pull off the other cover. Next hold the green screen with a pair of long nose pliers, carefully line it up and press it down. Voila, you will have a perfect fit. 73 Alan W1HYV ++++++++++++++++++++ From: "Dan Barker" To: "Elecraft" Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2002 16:12:19 -0500 Subject: [Elecraft] Double-sided tape my butt. Everyone is bitching about the double-sided tape. If it were = double-sided tape, it would match the description in the book. However, = it isn't. We expect to find something like doublesided tape in the kit, because = that's whats in the book. There is no way to peel off one piece of = backing paper, and leave the tape and the other piece of backing paper, = because there is no such thing. It should be described as Green Filter adhesive, and then no one would = be expecting tape, which implies something you can handle, usually = rectangular. Suggested wording in the manual might replace: Remove the white paper backing from one side of each piece of tape. = Attach the tape to the long edges of the green filter (Figure 5-13). Be = careful not to get any adhesive on the cneter portion of the filter, = since it might be visible after installation. with: Remove the white paper backing from one side of each piece of adhesive. = The adhesive will adhere to the brown backing. Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. When I built the first two K2's the supplied tape worked well. I just peeled the backing pressed onto the filter, pulled off the backing from the other side and mounted the filter. (BTW you need to clip the upper right corner of the filter to clear the bezel screw) The last two K2's I built I had problems with the tape also. Elecraft may have changed suppliers. The new tape is more like glue than tape and tends to stretch and ball up when the backing is removed. It's easy to screw up. I have done a little experimenting and found two alternate ways to mount the filter if you have destroyed the supplied tape. Scotch makes a two sided tape dispenser pen that makes quick work of mounting the filter. Just draw two lines along the edges of the filter with the pen and stick it in place. The downside is the pen costs about $4 but it would useful for many other glue jobs around the house (mounting QSL cards on the wall or in an album). The other method uses normal two side tape that comes on a roll. The tape is too wide, so stick it to the filter so half is hanging over the edge and cut off the excess with an Xacto knife or scissors. Then stick the filter to the inside of the front panel. Go to Office Max and purchase 1/2" wide two way tape. It worked for me and the green filter was installed in a minute. Price of the tape was 2.19 john +++++++++++++++++++++++
