All, I'm new to this list and will soon be ordering a new K1 4-bander with ATU. Before I get started, I'd like to know if anyone foresees any problem with me adding a second key jack for a straight key. I am aware that I can use either a straight key or paddles with the existing jack. The reason I want a second jack is that, for field contesting, I use my Palm PDA and a PIC circuit to handle keying and logging, and a separate paddle connected to the rig for manual sending. The PIC circuit keys the rig for contest purposes through a straight key jack, and the paddle would be connected through the existing key jack on the K1. So, to handle this setup, a second key jack is needed. In case you're interested in learning more about my field contest logging setup, see the Summer and Fall 2001 issues of QRP Quarterly, or go here: http://home.earthlink.net/~ekdave/golog.html I know this should be an easy thing to do with the K1, but I thought I'd ask anyway in case I'm overlooking something. Thanks & I'm looking forward to getting started on the K1. 73 de Dave NK0E ++++++++++++++++++++ Date: Sun, 06 Jan 2002 11:06:41 -0800 From: Phil Wheeler Organization: Outstanding To: Dave Ek CC: elecraft at mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Adding a (second) straight key jack to the K1? Dave, Re-reading your msg, my approach would not work. You need one key jack in paddle mode and the other in straight key mode. Might be doable, but not in a way I can think of .. since you need to use firmware program option to switch from one to the other. But perhaps someone esle has crossed this bridge. 73, Phil Dave Ek wrote: > > All, > > I'm new to this list and will soon be ordering a new K1 4-bander with ATU. > Before I get started, I'd like to know if anyone foresees any problem with > me adding a second key jack for a straight key. Date: Sun, 6 Jan 2002 12:31:39 -0700 Mike, Your understanding of my goal is correct. Certainly it would be difficult to manipulate the controller to have it switch between modes as necessary. What I was really thinking of was *bypassing* the controller with the second straight-key jack, accessing the keying circuit directly. Generally, all it takes is to ground the right line in order to key the rig. So I guess my real question is "is there easy access to the keying circuit?". Thanks for all the comments & ideas thus far. 73 de Dave NK0E ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike" To: "Dave Ek" Cc: Sent: Sunday, January 06, 2002 12:12 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Adding a (second) straight key jack to the K1? > > If I understand you properly, it sounds like you need the K1 to key in > *straight key mode* through your added jack, AND in *iambic mode* > through the standard jack. There where no whizz kids involved, it's just a QBasic program running barefoot on the interpreter of ye olde 486 laptop and a very simple interface to the keyjack of the K2. Tuning the PC and the K2 was easier than expected, it took me abt 10 minutes from scratch to get the right settings. From there on it's simply typing and filling the memories. I'll post the listing on my website later this evening. I'll try to get my hand on a compiler to make an .exe file as well. 73' Leo. ++++++++++++++++++
