Please save this for future reference. The most important thing to remember is that this is only a hobby - Let's have fun! 1. YOU MUST BE SUBSCRIBED to the [Elecraft] list TO POST to it. (This is done to stop advertising spammers from hitting the list.) Any postings sent to elecraft at mailman.qth.net by addresses different from the exact ones it shows as subscribers will be rejected. This includes alias (forwarded) addresses like w1xyz at arrl.net. If you use an alias to subscribe you must have it as your from: and return address too. Subscribing with w1aw at arrl.net from your physical address of joe at aol.com will allow you to receive postings, but your postings to the list will be rejected if their from: and reply to: address does not match your subscribe address.. Go to http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft to subscribe and to change your list preferences. To unsubscribe or to change your list preferences (digest, no mail on/off etc.), scroll to the bottom of the page and log in with your subscribed email address and the password that was sent to you by email when you subscribed (and monthly afterwards.) 2. If you want to provide an attachment, .JPG picture or other large file for use on the list, first post it to your personal web page and then post a link to its address in an email to the list. The list strips all attachments to prevent viruses from propagating and to keep the archives at a reasonable size. 3. Please keep the amount of copied text from previous posts to an -ABSOLUTE MINIMUM- in your replies. Always delete -everything- from the prior post except what is necessary to keep your reply in context. Most copied messages can be reduced to one or two sentences to retain context. remember to delete the email list footer form the previous post and especially avoid copying a long posting and adding 'Me Too!' at the bottom. As the number of users on this list grows (over 1500 now) we need to work to minimize information overload... If a reply is -not- of interest to the list, just reply directly to the posting party. 4. If you are overloaded by the volume of individual messages on the list, You can view the daily Elecraft list messages for each month in web format at: http://www.elecraft.com/elist.html . These archives are updated hourly and list postings by subject. Just click on the ones you are interested into read. You can also set your list email preferences to 'no mail' delivery, which still allows you to post to the list when reading via the digest. You can also change your subscription to the DIGEST version, which sends you a single compilation each day. To change your email list options or to subscribe / unsubscribe, go to: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft 5. Please keep all postings cordial. Please restrain the urge to email someone admonishing them about a posting. The last thing we want to do is to scare anyone off the list. Overly aggressive postings and negative comments about other posters only serves to scare away new potential list members. Waiting over night before hitting 'send' really helps to put things in perspective.. If you have a complaint about someone or a thread please email it directly to me ( eric at elecraft.com ) and I'll address it. 5a. Please do not post asking people to stop a particular thread, no matter how long, off topic or repetitive it gets. Email me instead :*). I will step in when I feel it is necessary to end a thread. 5b. Please do not post any direct attacks or snide comments directed at a list member. Enthusiastic arguments are encouraged, but please keep everything cordial. Members who verbally attack another (either via the list or via direct email) will be removed from the list. As the 'official' list Cop, I'll jump in as necessary to keep everything orderly. I do this off line and occasionally to the list when it is appropriate. Our goal is to keep the Elecraft list a fun, informative central clearing house for Elecraft information and enthusiasm. 6. Please DO POST your technical questions and comments to the list. Elecraft owners are your best source for quick answers (and they NEVER sleep!) If you don't get the answers you need from the list please email us direct at support at elecraft.com , which is our customer service address. We do try to watch the list traffic, but we may not respond to everything immediately and may miss some postings sent to the list or our personal addresses. 7. Please post your experiences with your elecraft kit, DX worked, crazy ideas, product ideas, complaints (yes - we do want to hear them). 7. Commercial postings are allowed if they relate to Elecraft products, QRP, QRO, homebrewing, building etc. and are of interest to this list's membership. Please keep them as short as possible and provide web links to more detailed information. I'll step in if we feel someone is posting too many messages of this type. 8. Personal attacks, flames, or strongly worded derogatory messages will not be tolerated. (Pausing overnight before pressing the send key really helps..) 9. Send parts requests direct to parts at elecraft.com, not to the list. 10. If you don't get an answer to a question from the list, or by checking the list archives, don't forget to check the Builder's Resource Page at http://www.elecraft.com and our support email address: support at elecraft.com 11. And above all, HAVE FUN!. We hope that this list is both a good technical resource and serves as a Elecraft community gathering place. We enjoy reading it every day and it really helps us keep our energy level high so we can continue getting exciting new kit projects out the door to you! 73, Eric WA6HHQ Elecraft List Admin. ++++++++++++++++++ From: Eric Swartz WA6HHQ - Elecraft Subject: [Elecraft] Why email doesn't make it to the Elecraft list. Hi, To post to the Elecraft list you must: 1. Be subscribed to the list 2. Submit only plain text messages (No HTML, attachments etc.) 3. Send your email to: elecraft at qth.net Here's a copy of what we normally send to each bounced message sender: =========== Your message was rejected by the [Elecraft] list and bounced to me because it was posted from an address not subscribed to the [Elecraft] list. You can add and change [Elecraft] subscription addresses via the email list link on our main web page: http://www.elecraft.com/elist.html Your email also was rejected by the [Elecraft] list and bounced to me because it contained HTML text encoding, or multipart MIME encoding for attachments, which the list rejects to save archive space. You can turn the HTML/MIME options off in your email program set up. The following links also can help: http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/listowners/html-off.htm or http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/1236/nomime.html. Note to AOL 6.0 users: If you have recently upgraded to AOL 6.0 you have a problem. 6.0 normally sends in HTML. We recently have fount you can send plain text by pressing CTRL-A and then left click, select TEXT > and then select NORMAL and send. If this doesn't work the only other alternative is to use AOL's web based text email service ot to go back to AOL 5.0. If you have problems fixing this please reply to this email and I will be glad to help 73, Eric - --- Submissions: elecraft at qth.net (You must be subscribed to post) Postings must be sent from the exact same addr. as subcribed. When replying to emails on the list, please remember to edit down the copied text to the minimum needed to retain context. One or two sentences for the original post are usually sufficient. This keeps the list and archive volume down and makes everything much more readable. *** Don't forget to delete the list footer message too or you will have multiple copies of it in your reply. 73 from your friendly Elecraft list manager Eric WA6HHQ -- http://www.elecraft.com +++++++++++++++++++ Date: Mon, 26 May 2003 02:35:51 -0400 From: "Thomas M. Add a "-- " (dash-dash-space) as the first line of your signature. This is an old Unix standard recognized by many email clients. It allows for the automatic discarding of that portion of the email when replying. -- Thomas M. Hi, I've noticed some of you are still using the old 'elecraft at qth.net' address to post your Elecraft list emails. We're now running on a new mail list server, mailman. The old address above is being forwarded to the mailman list address for a little while, but it will go away soon. GM Folks: I'm just as guilty as the next guy, so please understand that I'm not preaching here... Many times, when we are attempting to help someone obtain assistance in building - completing - troubleshooting their rig, we refer them to the page in their manual. The problem is that we often don't KNOW which manual they have at their disposal... I mean, we DO know that they have THE manual, such as _A_ K2 manual, in their hands, but we don't know what VERSION of the manual they have. And believe me, no two versions are identical. As a result, when we refer to "... page XX in the K2 Manual...", when they go to that page, they expect to find what we're directing them to. But they WON'T find it there, because they have a different version of the manual. In fact, there are some instances where their manual doesn't even ADDRESS the subject we found the version of our manual. So, let's try to remember to not only reference the model/option, page, and step/paragraph number, but also the REVISION letter/number of the manual from which we are quoting. Although Elecraft has been pretty darn good about posting PDF copies of the latest version of the manuals for each of their options to their web site, they seem to not retain copies of the OLDER versions there as well. Many times, it's the older version which we used to build our rigs. If we manage to lose the hardcopy original of our manual, we must download a newer version to our PC for future use. While this is generally no problem, there have been times when the instructions, component descriptions, or values have changed from one manual revision to the next, and when we go back and try to re-trace our assembly steps, or confirm that we put every component in the proper location on the PC board, we no longer can... at least using the 'newer' version of the manual. It would be very helpful, particularly to those of us who might have older rigs and options, for Elecraft to create a MANUAL ARCHIVES section on their web site which would contain any/all versions of previous manuals. Stepping down from my soapbox... ducking and running... 73 - Tom Hammond N0SSDate: Fri, 11 Jan 2002 08:06:43 -0600 +++++++++++++++++++ From: johnraycrawford at comcast.net To: elecraft at mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Please Post This... This is due to a problem at earthlink with their new SPAM filters. Their filters apparently mistake elecraft list email as SPAM when they see multiple emails to an earthlink account in a day from the same list. Earthlink then begins to generate a large amount of bounce/delay messages to the list, which causes the qth.net server for the elecraft list to automatically unsubscribe the user's address as a bad address. This problem is not restricted just to the Elecraft list or others at mailman.qth.net. It also is causing intermittent problems for lists hosted other places like yahoo groups. There is nothing we are able to do about it on this end :^( Earthlink is still not responding to the issue so earthlink user options seem to be: 1. Complain to Earthlink until they do something (don't hold your breath). 2. Get another ISP 3. Get a free pop3 address or web mail address and subscribe with it. 4. Stay subscribed with your earthlink account but set your elecraft list mail options to 'no mail' and read the list via our web page daily archives at http://www.elecraft.com/elist.html . This will allow you to still post to the list. Free pop3 accounts can be had at softhome.net and postmark.net which are both very reliable. Using forwarding addresses like arrl or qsl will not solve the problem, only make it worse for us to find bouncing addresses. 73, Eric WA6HHQ Elecraft list manager +++++++++++++++++++
