Deni, I do not have a K2 (yet!) but I do computer-control my IC-756PRO. I use the program MixW which combines the software for about 20 different digital comm modes, plus a useful logger plus almost complete control of the PRO by software. How much any program can do depends upon the command set and capabilities of the radio, of course. But of all the programs that I have tried, mostly for PSK31, MixW is the best for my needs. Its user macro capability is outstanding, allowing you to program just about any function your radio can handle. You can get a demo of the program at http://www.nvbb.net/~jaffejim/mixwpage.htm Take a look and see what it will do with your K2. It supports the Kenwood command set which I understand is what the K2 uses. 72/73, George W5YR - the Yellow Rose of Texas QRP-L 1373 NETXQRP 6 Fairview, TX 30 mi NE of Dallas in Collin county EM13qe SOC 262 Amateur Radio W5YR, in the 56th year and it just keeps getting better! I just finished setting up my K2 and KIO2 last night for use during CWSS. Using the NA contest Logging Program, I was able to get by with only one serial port by modifying my KIO2 cable at the computer end. I am using a 2N2222 as the switch for the CW keying. The base of the 2N2222 is connected to pin 4 of the KIO2 serial connecter through a 1K resistor, the collector is connected to the positive side of the K2 keying circuit and the emitter is connected to both the negative side of the K2 keying circuit and to pin 5 (ground) of the KIO2 serial port connecter. I was able to fit the circuit inside the serial connector clam shell and ran a additional two wires out of the clam shell for the CW keying circuit connection to the K2 key input jack. The last thing I needed to do was to set the K2 for HAND keying. NA appears to work great with the K2 by selecting KENWOOD1 as the XCVR type. Good luck to all this weekend. 73, Bob WO3B Quoting DeniGm3skn : ++++++++++++++++++++++ Date: Fri, 02 Nov 2001 11:03:04 -0800 From: Phil Wheeler Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K2 Remote and Contesting? Didn't know that .. but I guess I will soon, since my registration fee is off in today's mail. Hi Bob, For computer keying of the K2, you can also leave the K2 set for paddle use (INP menu entry set to PDLn or PDLr), and just make sure that auto-detect mode is enabled. The K2 can then tell the difference between a paddle and the computer so that you can leave both connected at all times. Use two "ORing" diodes from your computer's keying device (2N2222 in your case) as described in the K2 manual. Or just use two 2N2222s--one to the dot line and one to the dash line. The rev 2 firmware lets you turn auto-detect on or off. While in the INP menu entry, tap DISPLAY. 73, Wayne N6KR ++++++++++++++++++++ Date: Fri, 02 Nov 2001 13:40:19 -0600 From: "George, W5YR" Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K2 Remote and Contesting? Yes, Phil, it is more than adequate for most casual use and I understand from the docs that various contest formats can be set up, as well as importing and exporting ADIF, etc. The logger fields are filled in automatically with call and name (when you click on them) and the callbook entry is also pulled up. There is also extensive after-QSO editing provided for log entries, searches, etc. You can even program the call of a previously worked station to appear on the receive screen in a specified color. I am finding it to be the very best all-inclusive program of its type that I have used - and I have tried them all since 2/99 when I started in PSK31 with Peter's first program. On the other hand, it uses T.120 for the data, which would be supported. In essence, if you are behind a firewall using Network Address Translations you can make outgoing connections, but not accept incoming. I discovered this when I read the QST article recently and discovered that it wouldn't work. And of course Netmeeting, being the fine piece of crap software that it is, does not support Unix, which my firewall at home is. The only problem that I noticed is when I went from "Search & Pounce" mode to CQ mode, the rig would sometimes change frequency. The change continued as long as I held the Shift key down before hitting the Tab key. The change was about 1 KHz most times. This did NOT however happen any time that I went from CQ mode to S&P. That's about it for problems, except that I really gotta get a better antenna up as I did not do but half as well as I used to do from my QTH outside Vancouver, BC. Oh well, gives me a chance to spend the next year getting that done. 73, Ken K6CTW/VE7CTW +++++++++++++++++++ To: kcozens at interlog.com Cc: elecraft at mailman.qth.net Date: Fri, 8 Mar 2002 17:26:57 +0100 From: k6iii at juno.com Subject: [Elecraft] scoring of contests - get software I think you would guard agains confusion on these contests by using a contest logging program on you PC/Laptop. I like AE6Y's software, too. However, you must be aware that I've run into certain bugs. Scroll around in the log window (when you have no contacts yet) and you can make it crash. It will also crash if you switch back from keyboard CW send mode to logging mode (by hitting the caps lock key) while it is still sending CW. (I don't use the keyboard CW send mode for that reason) It will also sometimes mysteriously become erratic sending CW -- the timing gets all messed up. Maybe it is just this screwy Toshiba laptop I run it on.... A contest logging program for which contest, John? I have written a logging program for the Ontario QSO Party (which takes place near the end of April, BTW). It was originally written for DOS but I have tested a Linux port of the program. I have already started work on changes to the program to make it a more general purpose QSO party logging program. I have held off on releasing a Linux version of the program as I am still making some minor changes to parts of the program. Due to work on a Linux printer driver I recently discovered how to enable the CW keying portion of the program. My logging program might be useable under DOSemu although I haven't tried it myself.
