Runs Win98SE on a 650 Mhz Athlon CPU. The soundcarcard is a SoundBlaster 16 in an ISA slot. I went home and installed it on this computer which runs Win98SE on a Pentium 3 - 450 Mhz and a SoundBlaster card in a PCI slot. It worked fine on this machine. I also am curious as to why it did not crank on the other machine and gave the same error messages as you had. Sounds like it might be an audio driver problem. It would seem that I have chosen a mode which is not universally available! I am investigating the problem with a couple of folks who have emailed me directly and hope to have it sorted out later in the day. Basically is you see the message "Wave out open error 32", you will have to wait for an update, just click on Ok to close the box and then on Finish. If you try to use the programme it will all go horribly wrong and you will end up having to use task manager to shut it down... Koch belts it out to you at full speed, if you miss the character you miss it as the next one is upon you as soon as the last one is sent. This is real CW, no tricks, you are forced from the start to copy at full speed. Farnsworth recommends a delay between the characters so that you have thinking time to work out the character (replay it in your head?). As you 'improve' you reduce the gap between characters until you reach real time (or the Koch speed). The problem with Farnsworth is that it gives you time to think and thinking is BAD. You need to be able to copy the letters as a reflex - if I say the word 'and' to you, you don't go through all sorts of mental machinations to get to the word (did it hit it = h etc), you know it immediately as a reflex response. Herein lays the difference between the teaching methods. With Koch you learn the character the way it will always be sent from the first time you hear it, with Farnsworth you hear the character and have the delay to process it, you then fight to get this delay down to the standard inter-character spacing. Logic dictates that hearing CW at full speed from the start is going to be the best method of learning, after all, we teach natural languages by speaking them, we don't teach children to speak by putting artifically long gaps between our words as we speak to them - do we! Obviously this would be frustrating if you were to try and learn the full alphabet and numerals at the same time, which is why Koch starts out with two letters and builds up letter by letter at your own pace. At any given instance, after you have mastered the first two letters, you are only learning one additional letter. In my trainer, I chose to vary the size of the groups, rather than stick to 5 characters so that it closely modelled on standard words which have differing numbers of characters. Just my tuppence worth! 72's de Ray g4fon RSGB, BATC, GQRP-10698 QRP-L 2378 ray at g4fon.co.uk www.g4fon.co.uk +++++++++++++++++ Date: Tue, 5 Feb 2002 23:28:30 -0000 From: "Ray Goff" To: "QRL-L List" Subject: [119185] Koch Method CW Trainer Software - Version 2.x Folks, I have now heard back from a couple of testers that the "Wave Out Open Error 32" bug is now fixed, so I have uploaded this latest version to my website. These QSO files are thanks to GM0SOZ who made them available for use with the software. The book is about to be published by FISTS and contains an interesting chapter on Ludwig Koch. I have now integrated this into my software, which now has the option to play a modified version of the file in random order. You can update the file to include any words you would like to be able to recognise, or you can delete words in the file. To get the new version, which is 3.2.1, go to www.qsl.net/g4fon and follow the Koch CW Trainer link. While you are there, take a second to look at the new version of my Portable Loop antenna and also the QRP Wattmeter. 73's de Ray g4fon RSGB, BATC, GQRP-10698 QRP-L 2378 ray at g4fon.co.uk +++++++++++++++++++++
