++++++++++++++++++ 30 Meters is a great band... Use it. ++++++++++++++++++ From: "Rod N0RC" To: Date: Fri, 3 Jan 2003 21:06:54 -0700 Subject: [Elecraft] 30m While calling CQ during the Flea Fest tonight I got to thinking, had a lot of time to do that. ;-) Why don't we play on 30m more? Many of use live in compromise antenna situations. The antenna for 30m is shorter and can be lower. Advantage 30m. 30m has a power limit. Advantage 30m (to us low power types) QRM from Digi/SSB on 30 is less than 40 IMHO. Advantage 30m No contests on 30. Advantage 40m (not a biggie for me) No foxhunts on 30. Advantage 40m for many. You may not have license privileges on 30m. Advantage 40? Nope. Can you think of a better reason to upgrade? Advantage 30m. Propagation on 30 is more interesting, kinda like 40, open somewhere always it seems. Kinda like 20 with interesting DX possibilities. 30 has "numbers stations"! ;-) Now there are those who may think that with sunspot activity decreasing, 30 should be avoided. I say nay; I say prove it. I bet when that new NorCal 30 hits the streets 30 will se more action. Elecraft owners, how about trying for the CC on 30m? Don't have a 30m rig? Good excuse to buy a new kit and melt some solder. Frankly, I can't think of reason not to use 30 more often. I for one will be using 30m more. I agree with Rod....before I got the ssb board installed in my K2 I used it as a cw rig for almost 2 years, mostly on 30m. All the reasons Rod listed are valid. Went down stairs around 0530z and tuned around 30m, heard sigs! A Phoenix station calling CQ, a Seattle station working a JA! didn't hear the JA, shucks. After a while I set up shop around 10115 and called CQ. A few minutes later a very weak (339) station calls me and we have a nice chat for 10 min, until the QSB gobbled him up. The station was WB4DCW, Mike in TN. He was running 1 watt! And, it was the first contact he made with the rig he was using!! I think we all know how cool that feels. So there you go, 30m works late at night under poor solar CONDX (SFI ~120, K=4 YUK!). I'm taking the results of this little experiment as a sign that 30m should not be ignored. Any time of day, any time of year, any phase of the current sunspot cycle! Are you in? *** Happy Holidays *** 73, Rod N0RC ++++++++++++++++ Date: Sat, 4 Jan 2003 04:17:06 -0500 (EST) From: Thom LaCosta To: Rod N0RC Cc: elecraft at mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Re: 30m On Fri, 3 Jan 2003, Rod N0RC wrote: > > I'm taking the results of this little experiment as a sign that 30m > should not be ignored.
