Elecraft  KX1

On April 13, 2006, I had a nice qso with Drew, VK3XU (Melbourne, Australia) on 7.033 with this rig running 2 watts into a Carolina Windom! This was pretty good considering where we are in the solar cycle. Approx. 4,500 miles per watt!

It took me three evenings, Saturday and Sunday, to build the KX1, and put it on the air. I spent about 2 to 3 hours in the evenings and probably 5 to 6 hours on both Saturday and Sunday. I took lots of breaks, but once you get going, it's hard to stop. This building time, does not include the tuner or the 30m board.

Below is the automatic antenna tuner. Every rig should have one of these! What a treat it is, to hook up a piece of wire, and be on the air!

Below is a picture of my KX1's home when being transported. The case is a Pelican 1120. I use two small pieces of the same foam laid on top of the rig, which stops any vertical movement and keeps the vfo knob and pots out of harms way.

I often use a 12 volt external power supply, consisting of ten 2050 mAh NiMH batteries, which gives me 3.5 to 4 watts, along with saving the internal batteries.
