Hurricanes Dennis and Floyd dumped over twenty five inches of rain on our communities in September, 1999. Hurricane Floyd arrived on September 15th and dumped almost twenty inches of rain. Beginning September 16th, 1999, our namesake, the Tar River along with its tributaries, flooded many areas of Rocky Mount, Tarboro and Greenville, North Carolina and surrounding rural areas. Our club members provided essential (See the full story by clicking here) emergency communications for many days during and after these floods.  These floods far exceeded the 100 year flood predictions and in many places the 500 year flood predictions were exceeded. Many homes, businesses and industries in our communities continue to suffer from the effects of the these floods. Over fifty people lost their lives. Over 400 people were rescued by military helicopters that patrolled the area for over six days.

Following are some links to sites with photographs of the flooding during its worst.
