Basic
things about Packet Radio |
|
If you wish to
work on packet radio, all you need to have is:
- PC and VHF transciever
- TNC (Terminal Node Controler) or BayCom
modem
- Packet Radio Software.
On PR you can work enough good with old 286 and PIII, so
you don't have to worry is your PC enough good for PR
software. The best place for operating PR is VHF, but
there is also PR activity on HF.
TNC contains a modem similar to the modem used for
internet connections, except that it also contains special
firmware especially designed for Packet Radio. This
'firmware' converts computer data into packets of digital
information that can be sent (error free, via PR nodes)
acros the PR nodes. If you have not TNC, you can use
BayCom modem, which works on 1k2, and need special driver software for TNC emulation.
After that all you need is good software (like WinPack,
SP, TstHost, WinTstHost, GP, BayCom, etc.) and you are ON
THE AIR!!! |

There
is many PR programs available today, but I will tell you
only about most important of them. When you are trying to
find good PR software you need to think about two
things:
- software which you can use if you use TNC and
- software which you will use with BayCom modem.
If you have TNC, you don't need to use any kind of driver.
With TNC you only need to learn basic TNC commands, to
configure your callsign, and you are on.
If you have BayCom modem, you need to find software which
have support for baycom drivers, but it isn't problem
because many of packet programs have that support. In DOS
mode most popular drivers are TFX/TFPCX/TFPCR, which you
can use with programs like SP, GP, TSTHOST, etc. and you
can also use FLEX driver whith all of these programs. If
you work with DOS software under MSDOS prompt from
Win95/98, you will be only able to use programs with TFX
drivers, because TFPCX/TFPCR does not support Win95/98.
But you can use FLEX, which is the best and available in
versions for DOS/Win95, and you won't have any problems.
Some programs, like BAYCOM software, use specific L2
driver, and they can work under Win95 as well as under
DOS.
If you wish to work with Windows PR software, the best
choice is WinPack and TSTHost for Windows (but I like
WinPack more). For this programs you can use SV2AGW's
driver, and you'll have everything you ever wanted, and be
ready to go |

Now
you need to read manuals for your software, to put your
callsign in the program, and start to work. In all
programs, if you wish to call any station, you just need
to type 'c t95dxt [enter]' and you will start to call
station T95DXT. If you wish to call station via any other
station, you need to type 'c t95dxt t99xza [enter]' and
you will start calling T95DXT via T99XZA. All other
informations about PR, you can try to find on my links
page. |
