APRS

APRS

Automatic Position Reporting System (APRS)

An other new development in the area of digital communications. APRS whose creator is Bob Bruninga WB4APR offers a new dimension in our hobby, allowing us to specify our current location and the location of the stations that take part, to send and receive messages, announcements of special events or emergency messages.
The data is being transmitted in simple Packet Mode 1200 bps with a new protocol named MICE.

To take part in an APRS group you need:  A GPS, a VHF FM transceiver tuned at the frequency given by IARU for Greece: 144.800MHz , a PC (optional), a TNC or a Sound Card (for modem emulation using AGWPE).
The software needed for PC (and is being used by all Greek APRS users) is UI-VIEW by Roger Barker G4IDE free or 10 pounds for 32-bit version.

To use a GPS with a Kenwood D-7 do the following:

1. Connect GPS data cable with GPS jack on the transceiver.

2.5 mm jack ---- GPS data cable

3 Shield ----------- GND on GPS
2 Ring ------------ TXD on GPS
1 Head ----------- RXD on GPS

2. If using a GARMING GPS receiver select the following parameters in " INTERFACE " sub-menu on the receiver:

NMEA/NMEA
NMEA 0183 2.0
4800 baud
