CALLSIGN SYSTEM FOR GREECE, AS MODIFIED BY THE 2002 REGULATION -------------------------------------------------------------- REGUALAR SERIES SV1AA-SV9ZZ: Existing Class 1 licenses (exhausted) SV1AAA-SV9ZZZ: Existing and future Class 1 licenses SW1AAA-SW9ZZZ: New Class 2 licenses SV0AA-SV0ZZ: Foreign amateurs with provisional Class 1 license SV0XAI-SV0XZZ: Foreign amateurs with provisional Class 1 license SW0AAA-SW0AZZ: Foreign amateurs with provisional Class 2 license SW0XAA-SW0XZZ: Foreign amateurs with provisional Class 2 license SPECIAL CALLSIGNS SX1A-SX9ZZZ: Special Event, Contest etc SY1A-SY9ZZZ: Special Event, Contest etc SZ1AAA-SZ9ZZZ: Clubs, Societies and University laboratories J41A-J49ZZZ: Special Event, Contest etc (but see below for digital repeaters) REPEATERS ETC SV1A-SV9Z: Beacons and voice repeaters J41VAA-J49VZZ: Packet radio repeaters, VHF (144 MHz) J41UAA-J49UZZ: Packet radio repeaters, UHF (430 MHz) J41SAA-J49SZZ: Packet radio repeaters, SHF (23 cm and up) Suffixes: /A: Operation from the alternative location, specified on the license document. /P: Operation of a radio carried with its power supply by the operator (walkie talkies etc). /M: Operation of a radio permanently installed on a vehicle. /MM: Operation of a radio permanently installed on a ship or boat. /MM: Operation of a radio permanently installed on an aircraft. The callsign areas are: 1: Athens, Continental Greece (Sterea Hellas) 2: Western and Central Macedonia 3: Peloponesse 4: Thessalia 5: Dodecanese (separate DXCC entity) 6: Epirus 7: East Macedonia and Thrace 8: All islands (except 5 and 9) 9: Crete and its coastal islands (separate DXCC entity) For visiting amateurs with CEPT license staying for up to six months: SV#//P: Foreign amateur with CEPT class 1 license. SW#//P: Foreign amateur with CEPT class 2 license. In the last two cases there is also provision for "/M", "/MM" or "/AM" suffix. EXCEPTIONS AND ANOMALIES: * There is no provision with the portable "/P" suffix for temporary installations (for example a desktop radio, heavy batteries and/or generator in a tent with a wire dipole antenna). * The suffix "/A" and the prefix "SY" are NOT related to Mt. Athos. As described earlier, the prefix "SY" is used for special events and suffix "/A" denotes alternative station location. * The RAAG club station now uses new callsign SZ1SV. Other club stations are also converting their callsigns to SZ prefix, to avoid conflict with the standard SV series. * The three existing 50 MHz meter beacons keep the existing callsigns SV1SIX, SV5SIX, SV9SIX. This may cause a conflict in the future. Also the 28 MHz beacon SV3AQR keeps its existing callsign, which is the regular callsign of its owner. * There is no provision for a prefix for Mt. Athos. As there is no licensing authority in Mt. Athos, operations from there use either "/A" for permanent residents or "/P" for portable operations. So Father Apollo is licensed as SV2ASP from the authorities in Thessaloniki (Salonica) and uses SV2ASP/A from his "alternative" station location at Doheiariou Monastery. * There is no provision to modify the callsign of a portable or mobile station to indicate area of operation. Additions like SV1XV/9, SV3/SV1XV, SV3/SV1XV/P etc are not official. The formats prescribed by the regulation are SV1XV/A, SV1XV/P etc (but see exception for foreigners with CEPT licenses above). * A callsign may be re-issued to another amateur ten years after the lapse of the license or the death of its previous owner. * It is not clear if callsigns with two-letter suffixes shall be issued again, but there are reports that SV1CC and SV1SR has been heard on the air. * No usage is specified for prefixes SX0, SY0, SZ0 and J40. These series are available to cover any future and unforseen requirements, like a ham satellite etc.
