ARES / RACES …. What's the difference?

Here in Sussex County, NJ we support and encourage dual membership in both ARES and RACES.

• RACES is a governmental agency operating under the Office of Emergency Management. RACES can only be activated by official government request. Primary purpose is to support governmental communication. Private agencies, health and welfare are secondary.
• ARES operates under the American Radio Relay League. ARES can be activated by any amateur operator. The ARRL has support agreements with private agencies such as the American Red Cross and Salvation Army. ARES can also be used for events such as walkathons, marathons or any other function that could benefit from radio communications.

Before an emergency is declared, ARES operation can begin. Once an official request for RACES is made the same operators, operating the same equipment, on the same frequencies can instantly switch to RACES operation.
