 District Emergency Coordinator

New DEC for Sussex County

John Liguori – N2QVC

Sussex County has a new District Emergency Coordinator. Some of you may know me, but many do not. I am new to the position of District Emergency Coordinator, however I am familiar with emergency operations in the area. I am a certified EMT with Sparta Ambulance, 9-1-1 dispatcher for Sparta Twp. Police Dept. (Police, Fire, & EMS) and National Weather Service Skywarn spotter. I am also affiliated with the Sparta Township and Sussex County Office of Emergency Management R.A.C.E.S. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns regarding emergency communications for the county.s

ARES Net / NNJ Section

Section wide training and information net

The ARRL Northern New Jersey Section monthly ARES net will be held the second Monday of the month at 8:00pm on the Morris County OEM repeater, 146.895/146.295 PL 151.4. All amateur operators, whether they are affiliated with ARES or not, are invited to check-in. Any hams with questions regarding emergency communications will be addressed.s

 Y2K !!!

Year 2000 coming soon!

Hurricane Flloyd forced many agencies to look again at communications or lack thereof. Power lines, telephone circuits and radio systems were down all across the state. Emergency calls were rerouted; dispatch centers relocated and hospitals had no way of getting needed resources. Ham radio was greatly praised for its ability to restore lost communication.

To this date no agencies in the Sussex County area have requested standby assistance from amateurs. Some neighboring communities will have hams at local hospitals and local chapters of the American Red Cross.

LISTEN New Years Eve December 31, 1999 on the Sussex Amateur Radio Club main repeater. 147.300/147.900 TxPL 151.4. If you will be in the area for New Years Eve and if hams are needed for Year 2000 issues, requests will be made on this repeater and the Morris County OEM repeater 146.895/146.295 PL 151.4.

The Sussex County OEM Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will be activated on December 31, 1999 into January 01, Y2K. Emergency Management officials and a GPU rep will be on hand. The EOC is now equipped with a NJ State Police 800MHz trunked base station. This will provide direct communications with the State EOC in Trenton as well as other county operation centers.s
