PRESIDENTS THOUGHTS:

<>
Hi,

Sterlingfest was a great success and we had a tremendous time at the SPARC special event station. There is a short write-up at our web site.

The next SPARC meeting is on Monday, 18 Oct 04, and we have three major goals for the meeting.

First, Kevin, W4KLS, an advocate of the digital modes, will discuss PSK31 and similar modes. For those of us that are CW-challenged, these modes offer an alternative to only phone operation. I find the RTTY contests to be fun, but they require a slightly different set of skills. I am looking forward to Kevin's presentation to learn more about an interesting aspect of ham radio.

Second, we will have our initial discussion of VA QSO Party rules and complete the discussion at the November meeting. We have several comments from the log submissions last year and we have invited comments on the rules (on our web site). Dick, W2YE, volunteered to collect comments and lead a discussion. At our last meeting, Aubri discussed her strategy for the Va QSO Party and recommended a change to the 15 minute rule. I am sure this will be a key issue. Please think about this.

Finally, we will have a discussion about SPARC participation in upcoming contests. SPARC participates as a club in several of hte upcoming contests. In the past, the effort has not been very focused. This year, I hope we can organize a more concentrated effort and commitment to get our membership on the air. Dick, W2YE, has volunteered to lead a discussion about our past participation and the rules in the various contests.

Looking forward to seeing you at the meeting.

73,
Gordon
