PRESIDENTS THOUGHTS

Hi,

The next SPARC meeting is on Monday, 17 Nov 03.  We have a full agenda and it should be a fun time.

Frequency Spectrum Management Discussion

Bruce, a new SPARC member who attended his first club meeting in Oct, volunteered to give a short presentation on Frequency Spectrum Management. As amateurs, we are all interested in those segments of the frequency spectrum that we can use and during the big contests wonder why we cannot have more. Bruce volunteered to provide some insight into the history of spectrum and the process for allocating that spectrum.

Need Newsletter and Web-site Editor

Pieter, AI2P, has been the editor or the SPARC Newsletter and web site for two years.  He is looking for a replacement. We need a volunteer to take this over.

Conducting Technician and Morse Code Training Classes

At the Oct meeting, several stated their interest in conducting training classes for technician class and Morse code. I contacted Forrest, N4UTY, and he provided the following advice.

"I used the ARRL video tapes to teach the class and then filled in. The tapes have probably changed in the last five years, so the club will need to buy a new set. Will need one study guide per student (supports the tape.). We scheduled the class to end right before a VE session that had been scheduled and was conducted by the Herndon Repeater Group. We need to do the same -- end with either a SPARC sponsored VE session or to feed a VE session set up by someone else.
Will need a room with black or white board and VCR/DVD to conduct the class in. Good luck! Wish my schedule would permit me to help out, but right now, I'm up to my ears in work and other time-consuming stuff."

We need a volunteer to lead this effort. Given we have a leader, then we should discuss the things that need to be done to hold the classes.

SPARC Emergency Operations

Jim, AF4MO, raised the issue of SPARC involvement in emergency operations. He volunteered to investigate the issue. We are looking forward to his report at the Nov meeting.

Contesting

I heard from a few about their participation in the contests.

For the 2003 CQWW DX Contest (SSB), Jim, KF4PQL, "spent Saturday in Ed's ham shack (W4ECL) and we worked 120 contacts on 10,15, and 20 Meters. We made over 20 contacts on 10 Meters which was open for most of the day. We amassed about 40,000 points. Unfortunately I cannot submit my log for SPARC because I was 250 miles away from my home QTH."

Forrest, N4UTY, "managed 43 QRP (5w) contacts over about 2 1/2 hours in the CW sweepstakes this past weekend. Not too bad considering the time I had available. Guys really question a single or two digit number on Sunday afternoon! Lots of fun. Will submit the log anyway for the club."

We will have had three contests between the Oct meeting and the upcoming Nov meeting. SPARC'ies who participated in these contests should email their scores to Dick, W2YE, so he can prepare the club entry.

I think we are all looking forward to hearing an update from Dick, W2YE, on how well the club has done in the contests.
