11-12 February 2017 Tech License Class

The tech license preparatory course started on Saturday, 11 February 2017 at 0800 and was over at 1140 on Sunday, 12 February 2017. The course consisted of 10 classes followed by several on-line practice examinations.

22 students took the class and all passed the tech exam.  This included a two young men, one of which was 9 years old.  We had several students travel from onlg distances.  One said he was from West Virginia and drove 5 hours to get to the class and stayed in a hotel for two nights.  One young lady was getting her tech license as a surprise for her fiance, an avid ham.  We had several women and it seemed as if the average age was younger than in previous classes.

The instructors were amazing.  They knew the material, were obviously interested, and told personal stories to keep the classes' attention.   The instructors were: Paul, K4PDF; Chris, KK4HDG; Bill, K4UPE;  Earl, KB0NRK; Ken, KE2N, Mark, KI4OBT; Blair, KC9BBW, and Monte, KV4KS. Gordon, NQ4K, coordinated the event.

Paul, K4PDF, opened with the first class: T1 – FCC Rules, descriptions and definitions for the Amateur Radio Service, operator and station license responsibilities.

Chris, KK4HDG, taught T2 - operating procedures.

Bill, K4UPE, taught two classes:  T3 – Radio wave characteristics: properties of radio waves; propagation modes and T4 - Amateur radio practices and station set up.

Earl, KB0NRK, taught the class T9 – Antennas and feed lines.

Ken, KE2N, taught two classes: T0 – Electrical safety: AC and DC power circuits; antenna installation; RF hazards and T7 – Station equipment: common transmitter and receiver problems; antenna measurements; troubleshooting; basic repair and testing.  This was Ken's first time teaching at a SPACE Tech Class.

Mark, KI4OBT, started Sunday morning off with the class on T5 – Electrical principles: math for electronics; electronic principles; Ohm’s Law.

Blair, KC9BBW, taught T8 – Modulation modes: amateur satellite operation; operating activities; non-voice communications.

Monte, KV4KS, concluded the classes with T6 – Electrical components: semiconductors; circuit diagrams; component functions.

The class.

Gordon, NQ4K, in front of the class, ran the practice exams at the end of the classes.

Red, N3TG, stopped in on Saturday afternoon to talk about the examination session on Sunday.
Overall another successful event.
