S.T.A.R.S. CLUB NEWS LETTER

September 2000

Things have been fairly quite on the home front the last few months. We had another successful Field Day regardless of where we happen to end up on the Scoring List. A few mishaps but all in all a great time was had by all. Thanks to all that assisted with set-up and take down.

We are grateful to E.J. (N5QH) for use of his trailer mounted antenna. This was to be the last year that the STARS Club would be able to use it. E.J. is going to use it next year with the Dunbar School Club group. We also appreciate the use of the VA Communication Trailer. Thanks to Bill. There are several Clubs very envious of our Field Day Site.

Other news of interest is that Steve (N5QIH) and Scott (N5TSL) have been reworking the Club owned pop-up travel trailer that Steve and Donna donated to the Club sometime ago to make an Antenna Trailer out of it. It is really taking shape and anyone interested in helping or seeing the completed work so far can get in touch with Steve. It is located at his QTH. It is really starting to take shape.

Al (KC5UAE) has started action to schedule a Club Picnic for October 1st (2:00 p.m.) on the grounds of the North Little Rock VA Medical Center. The same place we had one a year ago. If you plan on attending please get in touch with Al and let him know. No definite type of meal has been planned at this time. Maybe just an old fashion picnic with sandwiches, hot dogs and hamburgers with side dishes would be the best approach. Let your desires be known either at our meeting September 17th or during our Sunday night nets.

Officer nominations for next year will be made at the November 19th meeting with election of Officers at the December 17th meeting.

We currently have 41 paid up members. A list is printed on the reverse side. I am not sure how many can receive this letter in HTML formatting so I am sending the email version in plain text. The only thing missing is the Header. Copies with the header will be available at the meetings.

Lets all enjoy our Hobby and stay safe. There is a requirement that all stations meet a RF Safety Code effective September 1, 2000. This IS NOT a great burden and does not require sophisticated measurement equipment. Most stations are in compliance simply because their antennas are located for maximum efficiency. Further information can be obtained on the Web at www.arrl.org/news/rfsafety/

I have also updated the Club Information on the ARRL Big Club List. We need to update information regarding the number of our members that are ARRL members. I would encourage each to join ARRL. While I do not agree with all of their actions, recommendations, or proposed rules I think we need as much representation as possible to help hold the privileges and frequencies that we enjoy. Reduction of Code Speed didn’t just happen nor was it the result of the FCC being big hearted. THINK ABOUT IT.

Remember our Sunday Nets at 8:00 p.m. and our monthly meeting the Third Sunday of each month 8:00 a.m at Shoney’s in Jacksonville.
