S.T.A.R.S. CLUB NEWS LETTER

.......................................................................................................................... July 1999

FIELD DAY 1999: We may not break any records for number of contacts but we certainly have a good time at our Club Field Day activities. This year was no exception. While the setup and take down crews could have been a little larger, we got setup and were ready to operate before start time. Thanks to Eric (KE5H) for bringing out E.J.’s trailer mounted tower and antenna. Alex (KB5YUA), son Nick and friend Jeff the 6 meter contingent and Scott ( N5TSL), our digital station expert. While our ground crew was a little sparse, it was quality and that was what counted. Thanks to Nathan (KD5FZQ), Larry (W5MPL), Mike (NL7RQ) and of course my indispensable Supervisory contribution.

I purposely did not list Steve (N5QIH) in the above list because I wanted to dedicate a special paragraph to Steve for his assistance in obtaining the site, making arrangements for a personal comfort station, chairs, tables, and many other items necessary for our Field Day activities. BUT all of the above pales in comparison to Steve making arrangement for and spotting the Mobile Command Trailer that we were able to use. If you have to rough it in the Field this is the only way to go. Completely radio equipped and air conditioned all running on emergency power. I heartily endorse at least a couple of "ATTA BOYS" for Steve.

We had a total of 27 licensed Hams and 8 visitors registered at our event. Alex (KB5YUA), will be submitting our results for publication in QST. It usually takes several months before it will show up. Hopefully they will get us in the right state this time. Although we did place higher the year they included us in Alaska.

We now have a total of 51 Club Members. This is the largest total that the Club has ever had since it was started. Thanks to all who have helped in supporting the Club, the Repeater and the general good operating practice heard on our repeater. I have heard several comments regard the quality of the repeater, but the best compliment has been the one describing the Hams found on our repeater as real friendly, helpful and quick to welcome newcomers.

Our Club Net is listed in the new 1999-2000 ARRL Net Directory now available from ARRL. Don’t forget you can also find it listed on the Club Web Page (http://www.webspinners.futura.net/k7zqr/) in

addition to other Nets, Club Events, and the number of messages being handled through the Traffic Nets operating in Arkansas. You don’t have to be on H.F. to participate in message handling. You can initiate traffic and pass it on the Club Net or the CAREN Traffic Net. It might surprise some of the participants but if Dale (W5RXU) is on he would be more than happy to take it and pass it on. I would also be more than happy to take it to the Region 5 net on 7280. If you have an outlet to other towns in Arkansas through Packet or other means, let me know and I will make a note and if a message is received for that area(s) I will send it to you for relay.

Al (KC5UAE), suggested that the Club might want to schedule another picnic. I immediately designated him Chairman to explore the possibility. He would need someone to help plan and carry out the work. Anyone interested let Al know the next time you hear him on the air.

MEETING: Our next Club face-to-face meeting will be July 18, 1999, 8:00 a.m., Shoney’s in Jacksonville. Join us for lot of Breakfast and a little Club Business.
