Corrections
It was omitted in the July 18 meeting that the VFW
4209 gift to the MARS operations was by the
Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW Post 4029.
From the Floor
Jim Pfister, NS1L, raised the point that the
recently enacted key control safeguards were
somewhat restrictive in that they required at least
six months member good standing status to be
issues a key to the club radio facilities. There was
discussion and the board granted an exception to
Mr. Pfister.
Reports
Barbara Million, KE4ZTW club social director
solidified the arrangements of the Christmas party.
It will be held the second Monday in December.
There will be a social hour starting at 6:00 P.M.
followed by dinner at 7:00 P.M. A map will be
published in the Oracle for directions to the White
Swan, a facility at Ocala Palms.. the price is $18.00
per person and the menu will include cordon bleu
and prime rib.
MARS
Johnny Williams K4ANJ announced that a phone
patch was completed from the Mid East last week.
[information on troop locations is omitted]
Membership
Phillip Frantz KF4QIC, Membership Chair announce
the entry into membership of J. Michael Harper
KQ4PP. A vote was initiated and Mr. Harper was
received into membership.
Testing
Tony Blalock reported that six individuals were
tested and four completed the licensing
requirements test.. He also reminded the club that
the Boy scouts will be having their camp out during
the third week of October 2005. It will be held at
the Youth Conversation camp in the Ocala National
Forest. He mentioned that the club will , in most
likelihood, participate in the event.
Net
Net Manager Jeanette Frantz repeated her plea
for assistance in conducting the net.
Marion County Emergency Communications. Bill Britt
announced that there will be a written test on
September 3, 2005 @ the Emergency Management
Office in the Sheriff department @ 9:A.M. Contact
Bill for any additional information associated with
this event.
Old Business
Bill Miller N6WGM, reported that work continues
to bring the Hamfest into reality. Bill announced
that Mr. Frank Butler, W4RH ARRL Director, SE
Division ARRL representative will have a table at the
December Hamfest.
New Business
President Bill Britt brought to the attention of the
membership that in several months election of
officers will need to be seriously addressed. It
appears that all the preparation enacted by the
secretary last year was pointless. It is fortunate
that there are members of the current
administration who are relentless in their work for
the club. But it is also noted that a member can only
serve two years in a position. Playing musical chairs
with positions has its limit of effectiveness.
Consequently without an infusion of new member
participation of the governing process, the "old
reliable" will have served their term limits as well as
reached their physical and psychological limits and
the organization will not possess a reserve of
dedicate individuals to assume the responsibility for
conducting the organization business.
If you are interested in serving, please contact the
secretary or any of the current club officers.
Jack Scott announced that some radio equipment
has been donated to the club and is available for
inspection in the club radio shack. Contact Jack
[N4NWT] for any further details.
The official meeting closed at 8:11 P.M.
Following the official closing of the meeting, Tony
Blalock, presented an interesting program to the
membership.

Subject: ham radio event on Sept 17
Mr. Schley,
I am an active ham radio operator and member of the
Silver Springs Amateur Radio Club. I was told that
you would be the best contact for possibly getting
some coverage of an upcoming event. Saturday,
Sept. 17th is Amateur Radio Awareness Day.
The link to the ARRL web site is
http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2005/08/20/1/?nc=1
On that Saturday, from 9am till 2pm, We will have a
station set up on emergency power at the Ocala
Discovery Science and Outdoor Center at Brick City.
This will be an opportunity to showcase some of the
many aspects of amateur radio to the general public.
We are also looking forward to a continuing
association with the DSOC in the future.
We would appreciate any assistance that you could
provide.
Thanks again and 73s
Pete WD4LST

Amateur Radio Awareness Day to Feature Emergency
Power Operating Event
NEWINGTON, CT,
August 20, 2005--
What makes Amateur Radio unique is the ability to
communicate with one another anywhere in the world--and
even in orbit--without having to rely on any outside
infrastructure whatsoever. Hams can even do this without
even being plugged into the wall socket. Experienced radio
amateurs take this capability for granted, but the general
public is far less aware of it. So, an Emergency Power
Operating Event (EPOE) on Amateur Radio Awareness Day,
Saturday, September 17, will highlight Amateur Radio's
ability
to communicate worldwide without commercial mains, the
Internet or a cellular telephone system.
"What better way to mark Amateur Radio Awareness Day than
by calling attention to this unique capability?" says ARRL
CEO David Sumner, K1ZZ. "It is particularly appropriate
since
September is the Department of Homeland Security's
National Preparedness Month."
Amateur Radio Awareness Day activities typically focus on
increasing public awareness. Past events have included public
demonstrations, talks to community groups and getting local
media coverage. According to DHS, National Preparedness
Month is aimed at encouraging Americans to prepare for
emergencies and to raise public awareness about the
importance of being
prepared.
This Amateur Radio Awareness Day, September 17, the
ARRL will sponsor a 15-hour Emergency Power Operating
Event for stations operating off the grid. "It is not a contest,"
Sumner stresses. "It is simply a demonstration of what we
amateurs can do without having to rely on the commercial
mains, and what we will do whenever the need arises."
An announcement in September QST (page 49) spells out the
details. The event kicks off at 1300 UTC on Saturday,
September 17, and wraps up at 0400 UTC on September 18.
The ARRL is inviting home stations to operate from
generator or battery power. Portable and mobile stations also
may participate. "We hope home stations operating on
batteries or generators,
mobiles, and possibly even some portables will participate,"
Sumner says, "although unlike Field Day, the emphasis is not
on setting up a temporary station, but rather on operating your
regular station on emergency power." There is no set
exchange; contacts may be casual, but operators are
encouraged to share information on their emergency power
sources in addition to the traditional signal report, name and
location.
ARRL Maxim Memorial Station W1AW will be on the air for
the event, running on emergency power from its 60-kW
emergency backup diesel generator. W1AW Station Manager
Joe Carcia, NJ1Q, says the whole point is to showcase that
Amateur Radio is prepared during National Preparedness
Month--"and any time, for that matter," he adds. A special QSL
will be
available to stations contacting W1AW while running from an
emergency power source. Include a self-addressed, stamped
envelope with all QSL card requests, and indicate on your card
the emergency power source used. (Address cards to W1AW,
225 Main St, Newington, CT 06111.)
"I hope we can work stations operating on emergency power in
all 50 states," says Sumner.
"It should be a lot of fun, and we may even learn something!"
The League is encouraging participating radio amateurs or
groups to invite local Citizen Corps leaders to see Amateur
Radio installations in emergency power mode. "The two events
offer great opportunities for Amateur Radio to showcase its
valued service
to the nation," said ARRL Field and Educational Services
Manager Rosalie White, K1STO. She urges ARRL-affiliated
clubs and Field Organization volunteers to take advantage of
the occasion to set up public demonstrations of Amateur
Radio and to present or even demonstrate--under the banner of
National Preparedness Month--the free services Amateur
Radio provides to the community. ARRL Club/Mentoring
Program Manager Norm Fusaro, W3IZ, believes a public
Emergency Power Operating Event offers a great opportunity
to recruit prospective hams for licensing classes clubs that
may be forming this fall.

JOTA WEEKEND---- October 15, 2005
The Youth Conservation Camp off RT 514 NE Ocala Campsite

there early Saturday Morning or if some could go out Friday
evening and setup that would be great. I'll probably operate
using my Mobile antenna Saturday. Any and all help would be
appreciated.

0001 hours local time, and end on Sunday, October
