SILVER SPRINGS RADIO CLUB

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

JANUARY 3, 2005

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 P.M. by Bill Britt KQ4UJ President. Board members present Bill Miller N6WGM, Richard Cardinali KG4TLE, Jeannette Frantz KG4DJA, Phillip Frantz KF4QIC [membership chair] and Maurice Schietecatte W4CEO.

The minutes of the December 2, 2004 board meeting were distributed and approved.

There was a preliminary discussion of planning strategies and date for the 2005 HamFest. There will be a general solicitation for members to assist and a steering committee will be formulated at the January membership meeting.

The question of purchasing a new radio for the "radio shack" was revisited. Bill Britt suggested that two radios be considered. They were the Kenwood TS 570 and the ICOM 706 MKIIG. A number of comparative points were presented and the board will recommend to the general membership that the Kenwood TS 570 be purchased. The tentative cost is estimated to be in the $1,00.00 range. A strong point was made that much of our present auxiliary equipment is of the Kenwood brand.

Board member Schietecatte inquired concerning the use of the radio facilities. Bill Britt pointed out that there is a malfunction in the tower apparatus and is being investigated as how to remedy the failed apparatus.

Bill Britt also mentioned that he has a tentative budget proposal. He will e-mail a copy to the board members for perusal and action at the next general membership meeting.

The meeting was closed at 8:14 P. M.

Richard Cardinali, KG4TLE, Secretary

If you are not a MERT Member, an active MERT Member, you are missing out on a tremendous opportunity for community service. Those of us who are active MERT Members will NEVER know how many lives we may have saved through our service at the shelters during Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne. We cannot take credit for that. But, every amateur operator who is physically able, should also know that we will NEVER know how many lives we might have saved,

IF ONLY!

The foregoing two paragraphs are editorial, but please think about this BEFORE the next hurricanes strike. It isn’t a matter of IF, it’s WHEN.

NEEDED: RADIO OPERATORS

SSRC RADIO CLUB NET

Amateur operators are urgently needed to serve as net control stations for the Silver Springs Radio Club radio net held each Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. At the current time, there are only two or three net operators, including your Net Manager. Therefore, operators are needed to make the weekly radio club net possible. If a few more operators would agree to serve, a definite schedule could be arranged to ensure that the net is covered every week. Your participation is important.

Anyone interested in participating should contact Jeanette Frantz, KG4DJA, at 489-0571 after 6:00 p.m.

Thank you.

THANK YOU, THANK

YOU, THANK YOU!

CHRISTMAS PARADE:

To all of you who provided communications and helped with the Christmas Parade, thank you. Those who helped are: Jeanette Frantz, KG4DJA, Phillip Frantz, KF4QIC, Bill Miller, N6WGM, Syl Phaneuf, KU4RY, Jim Hunn, K9DLE, Lou Gorski, KB9HD, Jessica (Gorski) Ezell, KG4EYU, Bill Parker, WB4GAA, and Bill Britt, KQ4UJ.

HAMFEST:

Then, just one week later, many of you came out to work with other club members to pull off Ocala's first real HamFest in over 20 years. This HamFest was successful beyond anything we could have hoped for, much less expected.

Those who worked the HamFest are: Loyd Adams, K4SLM, Tony Blalock, K4OCF, Bill Britt, KQ4UJ, Emily Cardinali, KI4BIH, Richard Cardinali, KG4TLE, Jeanette Frantz, KG4DJA, Charles Hensley, KC4Q (formerly KA0OGU), Wayne Hodgman, W1EXT, and Mrs. Hodgman, Jim Hunn, K9DLE, Bill Miller, N6WGM, Dick Moss, KF4ML, Syl Phaneuf, KU4RY, Tony Sassin, NE8A, and Jack Scott, N4NWT.

The HamFest resulted in a profit to Silver Springs Radio Club in excess of $500.00. Without your participation these events could not have taken place.

Special appreciation is extended to Bill Miller, N6WGM, who really spearheaded the HamFest, and to Tony Blalock, who worked with Bill.

HIGH PRAISE GIVEN TO

SILVER SPRINGS RADIO

CLUB, INC.

The Silver Springs Radio Club Annual Christmas Banquet and Awards Presentation was held Monday, December 6, 2004, beginning at 6:00 p.m.

The Christmas Banquet was attended by former County Commissioner, Tommy Needham, an ardent supporter of Silver Springs Radio Club, and his son, and Captain Chip Wildy, Director of Emergency Management, with the Marion County Sheriff's Department. Sheriff Ed Dean was ill with an upper respiratory infection and was unable to be present. Mr. Needham spoke eloquently about Silver Springs Radio Club, reminding all present that Silver Springs Radio Club has a lengthy history of service to the community. One of his strongest comments was, "You'll never know of the lives you have saved with your communications, but you can be certain that more lives would have been lost if you had not been there.

Mr. Needham credited Johnny Williams, K4ANJ, one of the charter members of Silver Springs Radio Club, as one of the driving forces which established civil defense and emergency communications in Marion County. He cited many instances where SSRC amateur radio operators came to the rescue, communication-wise, for the people of Marion County.

Mr. Needham strongly urged members of Silver Springs Radio Club to compile a history of the club, from the very beginning before that history is forever lost.

Captain Chip Wildy, Director of Emergency Management of the Marion County Sheriff's Department was another dignitary attending the Christmas Party. Captain Wildy likewise urged the club members to compile the club's history without delay. He pointed out that he has been with the Marion County Sheriff's Department for 24 years and that the Department has no photographs of the old jail located up on Ninth Street before the current jail was constructed. History Forever Lost!

Captain Wildy was generous with his praise for the efforts of Silver Springs Radio Club and MERT members who provided emergency communications at the Hurricane Shelters during the summer's multiple hurricanes, Charlie, Frances and Jeanne. Wildy emphasized that on many occasions during the storms, amateur radio operators at the shelters provided the only communications link between the shelters and the office of Emergency Management.

The food was very good, the company was very congenial and if you weren't there, you missed an extremely nice party.

It is imperative that we get down in print and in photographs the history of our club and those who worked so tirelessly to establish and sustain this organization. Anything less is a significant disservice to ourselves and our membership.

EVERYBODY, SOMEBODY,

ANYBODY AND NOBODY

This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody.

There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.

Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did.

Somebody got angry about this, because it was Everybody's job.

Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.

It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done!

PLEASE BE AN ACTIVE PARTICIPANT IN YOUR ORGANIZATION!
