June, '00 - Here is the latest Veep Bleep:

Last month we were supposed to visit the Deep Space Exploration Society. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate and we had a thunderstorm at about 5 p.m. with rain continuing until about 7:30 pm. Since most of the DSES stuff that we want to look at are outdoors we decided to postpone the visit until some later time.

I tried to set it up for this month, but none of the DSES people could make it. We have a very good chance, though of having the visit next month. I will need a list of names ahead of time and I will use the net to collect this. Please check in to the net on Sunday nights at 8 p.m. to sign up or for more info.

This month we will have a presentation by Paul Pond, N7ONI, and Bob Dornan, WA2EKU on Spectrum analyzers. Paul uses a very sophisticated spectrum anaylzer at his work, and he will bring this along so we can ooh and aah. Bob will give a short overview on spectrum analyzers and why they are one of the most important pieces of equipment to have if you are servicing transcievers. Come along and have great fun.

From the Editor:

Hello Folks! I wanted to ask those out in the amateur community about the state of Packet Radio in Colorado. It seems that we've lost another Packet BBS, although this hasn't been confirmed as of yet. Last September, K0RZ shut down his BBS in Louisville, and it seems as though W0GVT BBS is off the air as well. Y2K hit some of the systems hard when it did hit, causing strange quirks in the way they operated. To date, I don't know if there is a fix for this, or whether anyone has considered making one. I hope to speak to W0GVT and see what the status of his BBS is, or if he will bring it back online.

I know with the Internet gaining ground and the advent of new modes like PSK31, packet may seem outdated; however, a really good nationwide network was running not two years ago and today it seems to be falling apart bit by bit (no pun intended). If for some unforeseen reason the Internet were to shut down or lose part of it's support structure for an extended period, how could we fill the void? Let's not forget that not all Hams have the Internet, I hope they are able to use packet.

I have tried over the past few months to access other BBS's listed on Web Pages around the Front Range and have been unable gain access. If your shack or your club supports a 2 Meter Packet BBS, Please send me the Frequency and Callsign of the BBS. I will generate a current list of Front Range BBS's and post it here in the Splatter. Please check the status of your BBS station to see if it operating as it should. Again, please help me to compile this current list. You can send the information to my E-mail :[email protected] or [email protected] or drop a message in my packet mailbox @KB0SXQ-1
Thanks, Bob KB0SXQ
