The President's Corner
I hope all have had a good summer cuz it is ending fast. Food processing, canning, and drying here at Shan Creek is in full swing. Wine to make and apples to do in a few weeks. I am glad summer is almost over. I did over 1000 pounds of fresh vegetables from the garden and I'm still doing tomatoes and summer squash. Not much to do about radio except that I think 160 meters might be the next QRP band I use when I go into the woods, just to see if it can do the job with less QRM. I hope to see you all at the picnic on Saturday at 11:00 AM and I have some stories to tell about the Kalmiopsis.
Hope to see you at the club meeting.

Welcome From Your Editor
I missed you all last month, but my wife and I sure enjoyed the Statler Brothers at the Josephine County Fair. I'm looking forward to this Saturday's picnic and next Tuesday's meeting. Next month, I'll be in Kentucky for the birth of another grandson, so I won't be at the meeting and there won't be a newsletter for October. If you have any changes to the mailing list or roster, leave me a landline message or send me an e-mail.
If you have anything to submit for publication in the Gnus, see the contact information below the masthead.

Coming Attractions
At the next SOARC meeting, John Bell, K6KWZ, will tell of his experiences in getting back on the air after WWII, particularly regarding a 5 meter (not 6 m) "DX pedition". An interesting old timer's "sea story".
See you at the picnic on Saturday!

Last Test Session
We had nine participants at the last SOARC/ARRL license test session and all nine were promoted to the next license level. In addition, we had one brave soul certify at 20 wpm during the SOARC CW code testing session. Congrats to one and all!
The next session will be the last Friday of November, the 24th, at 6:30 PM, as always, at the Senior Center, 4th and C Sts. Be sure to bring copies of your CSCE, your current license, and a picture ID (driver's license). We have to send the copies in with your test results. The cost is still $6.65.
This is it for us for the year! Was that ever quick! The tally for us so far is over 75 tested this year.

Jamboree On The Air
Once again we have an opportunity to share our hobby with young people. Saturday, 21 October 2000 will be the 43rd Jamboree on the Air or "JOTA." This annual event gives hams, worldwide, an opportunity to demonstrate their hobby for girl scouts, boy scouts, campfire, and other similar organizations.
This year, the Roaring Rogue District of the Boy Scouts of America will hold their fall encampment at Camp McCalib--down the Illinois River. Two years ago, during JOTA, we attended their fall encampment. This year they have asked for an encore performance.
With all the new technological "whiz bang" toys available to young people today, I feel we should not allow an opportunity like this to slip by. Please mark your calendars for Saturday, 21 October 2000. Fortunately, we have two club meeting before JOTA. I ask for your assistance, input, and ideas so we can show the young scouts in our area that ham radio is a fun and exciting hobby.

Sunday Drive
What do you do on Sunday morning when the football is wearing a bit too thin? Well, you can turn out and search for someone in order to deliver an urgent message.
Brian, KK7BF, got the call along with Bill, KC7IXX, to find someone who was staying somewhere in the Klamath Falls area. No phone, no address, just a limited description. Well, the 2 meter attempts failed, so Brian went to HF and the Klamath hams went out in there cars and did a physical search. They found them within a couple of hours and the message was relayed.
Amazing what can be done on a Sunday afternoon.
