The President's Corner
Another month has blitzed by; at least it seems that way to me. The weather has been better than April usually serves up. This has helped to remind me that I have been neglectful about getting my batteries charged and radios checked. We may be in for a long, hot summer. This will be good for the visual stimulus of youthful remembrance. This will not be good for those of us who watch for fire. So get your memories and radios in order.
I will see you at the club meeting--bring a friend.

Welcome From Your Editor
Beginning with this issue, the Gnus is now available online for all SOARC members with internet capability. Mailed copies of the Gnus will be sent only to members who do not have an e-mail address listed on the club roster or those members who still wish to have a copy mailed anyway. Also, a mailed Gnus still is being sent to households with family memberships where one or more members do not have an e-mail address listed on the roster. An up-to-date roster is included with the mailed Gnus, or available online at our website. Please check your listing and report any changes, corrections, or additions to your editor.
If you have anything to submit for publication in the Gnus, or you just want to communicate something to your editor, you can contact me at 471-0440 or at mdwmkw@cpros.com.

April 7th License Testing--A Success!
Everything seemed to fall into place as 25 examinees appeared for new and upgrade ARRL tests. Of 29 exams given, 22 passed, and there were a lot of familiar faces in the group! In a strange way, with all of the successful test upgrades, you would think that we would have sent in more than just three new licenses earned. Ah, but it's that FCC restructuring that's the cause. On the 17th (the day before our club meeting), the SOARC VE's will have held a paperwork-only session and, during that affair, there will be 18 more upgrades sent in from the April 7th session. So, with the built-in wait until the restructuring day takes effect, there will be be a total of 21 new license upgrades. There was one new license earned as Sandra went through the code, novice, and tech written tests to be a tech+. Hopefully, there will be peace in the house now...
Remember, when you come in on the 17th at 6:30 p.m. be sure you bring your CSCE copy, your I.D., and another $6.65. The FCC doesn't take American Express.
A special thanks to the Western Belles for pitching in during the entire exam. They kept the place civil and the tension low. Thanks also go to Bill Leiken who did yeoman work inside the exam room keeping the papers from drifting; helping with everything except the actual monitoring.
73, Bill, WX7U
What's Your Code Proficiency?
Just because the ITU told the FCC to drop code requirements to 5wpm, does that mean you can quit studying code here in Josephine County? Ohhh no!
The SOARC VE crew intends to continue code testing at 5, 13, and 20 wpm and offer a new test for 25 wpm--yes, 25!! SOARC will offer our own endorsements and, frankly, flaunt them in the face of ARRL for "caving in" like a sand cave at high tide. You won't need them to upgrade, but you might want them for your own personal pleasure
You use code or lose it. Our certificate will be one of those really nice ones that will dominate your wall of amateur radio awards and certificates. Code is a test you can't fake. You either copy it or not. There's no answer sheet somewhere to memorize. Perhaps, someday, knowing code will be so esoteric it will be like knowing how to read hieroglyphics...but not yet, bucko.

Calling All Ladies
Western Belles is a new women's ham radio chat group that meets at 7:30 PM on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month on the 147.300 repeater. They will have a luncheon on the last Saturday of each month and all lady hams are welcome to attend.
Please check in!
73, Wilma, W1LMA, and Anita, KC7MGH
