Soapbox Comments ________________ As tradition calls, the 40m beam broke down just before the contest. This year's show was something new, though. When we started tuning up the gear we noticed that the SWR was behaving very strange with a reading that was fluctuating quite a bit, and when we looked up the tower we became aware of why it did... The antenna was on fire! It turned out that the cable connection to the gamma match was full of water, and the mismatch caused a lot of heat that set the insulation on fire. At that particular time (10 minutes before the contest started) we felt that even though it was a pretty little fire, we would have been better off without it. We were back in business on 40 about one hour later, so no real harm caused... I have observed all competition rules as well as all regulations established for amateur radio in my country. My report is correct and true to the best of my knowledge. I agree to be bound by the decisions of the Awards Committee.
