SCCARA in the 1930's -- our second decade

SCCARA sponsored the Fourteenth Annual ARRL Pacific Division Convention in 1933

The convention brochure
contains a lot of history, pictures, and descriptions of the Santa Clara County (then called The Valley of Heart's Delight) and surrounding communities.   For us today, it sounds like a different place of natural beauty, prosperity, and wonder.   It was compiled by the San Jose Chamber of Commerce Publicity Department.

The convention program itself is an insert.   (3.1 MB pdf)

Here is the convention brochure and program insert combined.   (19.5 MB pdf)

The club station, W6SV, gets a new location and new equipment in 1936

Moving in, August 24, 1936.   Willis Clayton W6JTE (left) and Lloyd Saxon W6EEX carry Clair's transmitter equipment to the club's new location, above the fan room in the tower of San Jose's Municipal Civic Auditorium at Market St. & San Carlos St.

Bud Jacklin W6IXJ (left) and Ed Merrill W6NRG set up Clair's transmitter at the club's new station location.

Col. Clair Foster W6HM died October 1935.   His estate donated Clair's equipment to SCCARA.   The July 2007 SCCARA-GRAM has an article about the club's new station at the Civic Auditorium and Clair's equipment, (reprinted from the January 1937 issue of QST).
At the Aug. 10, 1959 meeting the club voted to donate Col. Foster's transmitter and all accomplanying and historical equipment to the Almaden Museum.   In March 1960 the donation was completed.   The New Almaden Museum became the Perham Foundation which later became the Douglas Perham Collection of Early Electronics.   That collection eventually ended up at History San Jose.

Dec. 22, 1936 we renewed our club station license, W6SV.   It's good for 3 years.

    Bits and Pieces:

1930's SCCARA membership roster.
It's possible this is a partial roster with those marked who signed up for an event (there are check marks and the last page says something about Pacific Grove).

Membership application from between 1928 and 1935,
interesting that nationality is one of the questions back then.

Minutes aren't complete, but this is what still exists.

    Correspondences and Letters:

Oakland Radio Club wants to sponsor the 1936 Pacific Division Convention, contacts SCCARA about it, we approve.   And a TV demo was presented (see newspaper article below).

SCCARA corresponds with Boeing about speaking to us on Radio Beams and Air Navigation.

SCCARA corresponds with City on a new meeting room.   We were meeting at The Camber of Commerce Hall, they're moving and will have a new auditorium, we'd like to arrange to meet there.

Meyberg Company wants to know if SCCARA is interested in a talk on their latest RCA radio products.   Yes we are, but we're just getting settled at our new location.

SCCARA warning letter to W6NCM advising that he has a noise problem covering 150 kHz wide.

Misc. communications with FCC, including SCCARA's club station move to the San Jose Municipal Auditorium.

SCCARA nominates Elbert Amarantes to Section Communications Manager.

SCCARA invitation to ARRL official to dinner at our hamfest on Aug. 17, and hoping to get some info on the frequency situation.

Members can get a deal by getting their ARRL membership through SCCARA.

SCCARA letter to the Red Cross informing them two of our members are now registered with teh ARRL emergency Corps and SCCARA will soon complete our new transmitter.
