CALLSIGN PREFIX LIST

Callsigns for the world's nations are determined by the ITU – the UN Agency which co-ordinates all radio activity. The ITU allocates a block(s) of callsigns to each country, and all that country's callsigns must begin with that prefix. This applies to all its radio amateurs, aircraft, ships and broadcast stations etc. Usually the callsigns that a country allocated to amateur radio come from one or two standard sequences, however from time to time special out of sequence callsigns are issued. The following list shows callsign prefixes currently in use. Most are derived from the callsign blocks allocated to administrations by the ITU for use within the countries, territories and dependencies for which a country is responsible. Also shown are some unauthorised prefixes which may be heard and which may or may not he recognised as a DXCC country. Examples are; 1S Spratly Archipelago and 1AO S.M.O.M. Both of these are DXCC countries although the prefixes used are unofficial. 1B the Turkish area of North Cyprus and X5 the Serbian occupied area of Bosnia are unofficial and are not recognised for DXCC purposes. Where this applies the country details are primed in italics. Information which is not a country name is also printed in italics. Where a prefix is shown that is perhaps unusual then the common prefix is shown after the country name or details.
