Date : 3rd & 4th October 1998
Venue: Taman Kinabalu, Ranau, Sabah.
Organiser : Sabah Tourism Promotion Corporation
Event Coordinator: 9M6JJ Joseph

"CQ CQ Base Station. This is Florence 9W6AI reporting from the submit of Mt. Kinabalu, Low's Peak at 4095.2m amsl, the highest mountain in South East Asia. As for the Men Open category, the first runner to reach the Low's Peak is Bruno Brunod from Italy with recorded time to reach Low's Peak is 1 hr 46 min 18 sec. Second runner is Ian Holmes from Great Britain at 1 hr 46 min 44 sec and closely followed by third runner Guianus Salagan from Malaysia at 1 hr 46 min 47 sec."

Task assigned to members positioned at the peak included Florence 9W6AI, Haslin 9W6HJ and SWL Suffian was to monitor and report on the progress and result of the race from the peak. Sounds exciting ? Tracking to the peak was exciting and indeed the toughest challenge; the altitude, the steep track, the temperature and the wind.

'We left Laban Rata at 3:30 am and reached Sayat-Sayat Hut at 5:00 am. After a short rest, we proceeded and reached the peak at 7:00 am. After some time, for about an hour, the temperature was testing our endurance, confidence, strength, energy etc. As more and more runners were reaching the peak, our concentration was on the runners rather than the environment which we were sort of immured. The temperature was 12° C to 15° C, wind varies from 5 to 10 knots; visibility was excellent that morning. We spent more than 3 hours at the peak. Despite all the challenge, we dare to say that we all enjoyed ourselves. I'm sure everyone who went up shall agree with me if I say, "we enjoyed the real Ham Spirit every minute on the Climbathon '98", said Florence 9W6AI.'

For 10 consecutive years, SARS have provided radio communication coverage for the world's toughest mountain race, i.e. 12th Mt Kinabalu International Climbathon, involving 26 members positioned at varies check points from the Starting/Finishing Line to the submit, the Low's Peak.
