Desroches is a pocket-sized paradise, an
exquisite coral island five and a half kilometers (3.5 miles) long and one kilometer
(approx. 0.6 miles) wide, a world of coconut palms and casuarinas. Desroches, the largest
island of the Amirantes Group is 150 miles south-west of Mahé, in the fascinating
Seychelles. The Island is ringed by a reef and idyllic shallow
waters - with thirteen and a half kilometers (7.5 miles) of beach for not even 50 guests.
You can explore the Island on a bike which is available for every resort
guest free of charge. There is a small village on the island where the people working in
the coconut plantation live. The only "industry" (if you want to call it that
way) on Desroches is the production of copra from the coconuts.
Diving on Desroches is spectacular. You will not find the coral
environment that you may expect if you have dived the Maldives, but there are very
impressive canyon-like formations and fantastic caves with lots of surprises inside. We
saw huge rays on every dive and often gray reef sharks and white tip sharks. If you feel
comfortable in caves ask the dive master to take you to the "Church" you will
not regret it! Desroches has also suffered from the El Nino warming killing corals in
large areas, but a lot is still alive and we all hope the corals will recover soon.
Situated in the Amirantes archipelago Desroches is a great place for
big-game fishing. The resort's "Cookie Two", a Riviera 36, is equipped with
first class Penn International rods and reels.
The cuisine on Desroches is excellent. You can enjoy Creole cuisine in
the elegant main restaurant. The choice is wide, with attractive buffets and mouth
watering à la carte menus. Lazy lunches are served in the shade at the friendly and
much-loved "feet in the sand" beach restaurant. |
