NOTICE OF MONTHLY GENERAL MEETING FEBRUARY 26TH 2002 - TUESDAY

Please be informed that the monthly General Meeting for February will be held on the 26th TUESDAY at 5.50 PM at THE Ceylon Tourist Board Committee room, Galle road, Colpetty at 0530 PM. Please note that the last Wednesday being a Poya day has made us advance the meeting to Tuesday.

Please note that unless otherwise notified, monthly General Meetings will be held at The Ceylon Tourist Board Committee room, Galle road, Colpetty at 0530 PM on the last Wednesday of the month at 0530.pm. Please also monitor the RSSL net regularly on 145.625 MHz at 0900 p.m. for RSSL announcements

.Bharat Aponso who was elected as a council member to represent Associate Members received his Amateur Radio licence and has been transferred to Corporate Member category. At the next General Meeting another Associate Member will have to be elected to represent Associate Members in the Council of RSSL. Only Associate Members can propose and second a nominee for this position.

" The RSSL has decided to compile an email directory of members. Members who

have email addresses, please send your name, call sign if corporate member and email address to kusal@ieee.org. Once the directory is compiled, it

will be circulated among members. " If anyone has objections to his/her e-mail address being put on the directory, please indicate so. In which event, the e-mail address will be used only for official purposes. We will e-mail all RSSL notices and the Newsletter free of charge via e-mail. However, your e-mail address will be used as a BCC in such mail.

THE FIRST EVER 2M REPEATER OPERATION IN SRI LANKA

It was way back in 1980 that my good friend Karl Boymanns DJ2NH proposed to gift us a 2-m repeater. Repeater operation in Germany were very many and Karl was very keen to have one in Sri Lanka. After several discussions with the Telecom authorities the frequency 145.500/145.600 was agreed to be used.

In February 1985 Karl arrived here with three of his friends DL1ER-Uli, DE9KH-Rold and DJ8AJ – Otto. A professional repeater (Stono) complete with the auto caller. WACOM Duplexer was brought in and Karl had to pay duty only for the Duplexer which was packed in a big box.

)n 5th February 1985 with kind permission granted by the Director of Telecommunications the Repeater, Antenna (Ring O Ranger) was installed at the OTS micro wave tower and the Stono repeater was housed in the radio room under the tower. It was great joy and satisfaction for all of us to hear the repeater giving the call 4S7RSR when we actuated it with a 1750 tone. The total height of the repeater antenna was 225 ft above sea level.

After the installation was completed we tested it with out mobiles from most parts of Colombo, Beruwela and at certain spots at Kurunegala and it worked very well. I remember a contact from my car-mobile with Ekendra-4S7EF who was mobile in Nuwara Eliya.

Before Karl and his friends left Sri Lanka they made the following note in Golden Book of visiting hams

"Dear Ernest, we hope you and all your friends will enjoy the Repeater (4S7RSR) we have mounted on your OTS tower. We all was very glad that it works so good at the time we stood here. If you have any problems with it tell it to us and we will help you" - Ernest Amarasinghe 4S7EA

What is iLINK?

iLINK uses VOIP (Voice Over IP) to send voice data over the internet. When you go 'ON AIR' you are transmitting on the remote radio - there is no VOX unit in use so audio levels are not a problem. Just remember to get a reply you must go back to RX MODE!

First Time User?
First of all you must enter your callsign and a brief description into the first screen - this will appear on your first use of the software. Example M0CSH and NORTH KENT,UK. Also you need to enter a password for your
callsign - this will appear in the validation code box later on.

To use for the first time, run the program and click on the BEG (BEGIN) option in the menu bar. This will bring up a menu of who is available on the system right now. Repeaters have a -L or -R and are live to air. First, to get the hang of the system, look for a user - callsign in the list. Click on this and highlight it - then press enter or click on the OK button. You should now be connected to this station. Wait a little, then press the space bar, enter key, or click on the RX icon with your mouse to change to the TRANSMIT MODE. Speak into the mic - making sure you are not causing too many red bars on the meter - then press the same key as before to return to the RX (receive mode) and listen for a reply. 

When you have finished - click END to end the connection.

Some entries may be Conference Servers - this means that many stations can connect and talk to, transmitting and adopt 'radio procedure' - there may be LIVE

Dear Victor,
A great surprise recently to have Shelly Gunewardena get in touch with me after 50 years. He was taken on the Rado SEAC staff in my days and spent much of his time at the receiving station at Hora Hena. We have swapped a number of emails recently catching up on old times! He is now in California and doing well in his own electronics business. He says I got him started on electronics! Email him at milspecmag@aol.com

I have also heard from Iver Cannon,(email: cannon8422@aol.com), who is in touch with Shelly. He visited me once in UK the year after I finished in Sri Lanka. He came then with his twin brother Trever who has since died.

"in the good old days. I use to attend meetings at CISSR all the way from Keselwatta, Hi! I remember Dik 4S7LM (A silent key now) who took part very actively. Also Soma, 4S7YL, I remember once I have visited an exhibition at St Bridget’s Convent and saw Soma having her shack exhibiting to the general public. I was standing their for hours, and she called me in and handed over the mic to me and wanted to say a few words to 9M2DA where she was having a QSO. I was delighted for the same. I have also taken part in DF activity at Mihirigama where John Amarathunga gave all the hams a gala dinner etc. I cannot remember his call sign. Those are the good old days back in Sri Lanka. I do not know it is dry to say all this to you but it is some kind of info to you.

I want to become a life member as to avoid sending subscriptions now and then. It will be easy for me.
