RSSL SHACK-At Ceylon Tourist Board H.Q

The Council of the RSSL wishes to thank all members who attended the October meeting which was the first meeting at the Tourist Board complex in Colpetty. The show of support was tremendous and the house even approved Rs. 30,000 towards the purchase of equipment for the shack. However, that was not necessary through the outstanding generosity of RSSL friend Hans Neddermann DL6IQ/4S7IQG who gifted an entire station to the RSSL shack comprising of an Icom Transceiver, automatic antenna tuner and power supply. The Council wishes to thank Hans DL6IQ for this wonderful gift on behalf of the entire membership, and for being a friend of the RSSL

4S7DF, RF and others have already set up the station. Unfortunately the RSSL beam antenna has hit a snag because the custodian was unable to locate the boom! The moment the boom is located and tested, Dhammika and Co. assure the membership that the antenna will go up. A temporary wire antenna is in place at the moment. Members can inspect and operate the station at the forthcoming RSSL monthly meeting. The official inauguration of the station will also be discussed at the November General meeting. It is also proposed to open the station to the membership on nominated days on a trial basis. The council hopes the new shack will promote more fellowship including decamping to Crescat Food-court after operating the station. The RSSL will expolore other places as well. The central location of the shack should make it very convenient for members to get-together.

HELP NEEDED- Now that the RSSL has its shack it is necessary to have a force of volunteers who will assist in projects to generate more awareness of Amateur activities and how it could benefit the community. The level of activity will be proportionate to the level of acceptance both officially and by the community in general. Please contact 4S7DF or the Sec. 4S7PR or any one of the Council members who will be only too pleased to have your assistance. The appeal goes out to all hams and associates alike. After all the Associate members of today are the hams of tomorrow.

POTENTIAL HAMS: It is with great anticipation that we like to inform the membership that nearly 50 candidates presented themselves for the Morse (CW) practical test which was conducted a few weeks back. This is a tremendous show of interest and augurs very well for the future of Amateur Radio in Sri Lanka.

Well SW radio listening could be great fun at times of crisis. If you have a good radio and know where to listen .to, it can be very exciting. This was my experience listening to the Voice of Shariyat of the Taliban before it was bombed. The station had been operating inside the 7 MHz ham band on 7085 kHz on AM. Their English broadcast was from 1515-1530 UTC. On the 9th of October I was listening to the station until 1600 and when I returned to the frequency at 1608 I found the station missing. The previous evening the US started the bombing campaign and when the electricity supply of Kabul was hit, the station went off the air, however on the 9th when it went I knew the bombing had started again. 10 minutes later the VOA/BBC announced that a second days bombing was on. The next day the station failed to come on the air and it was obvious that the station had been hit the previous night. To think that I knew before the US that the station was hit was quite a listening experience.

If anyone needs any frequencies for any station you are welcome to contact me. Best regards and 73. Victor 4S7VK
