If previously active regions return later in March-April we may be treated wIth similar happenings. Also, Es levels in the first part of March got to extremely high levels -- once with a theoretical MUF in the 120-MHz range. -------- Again, for the benefit or any new members unfamiliar with the mode of propagation known as backscatter (bs), a brief discussion follows. To get backscatter the F2 or Es MUF must be high enough to provIde a direct path to some distant point. Once the signal has reached that point the majority of it continues in a forward direction. However, some of the signal is scattered in other directions by the ground (or ocean) and a very tiny fraction is able to return back in the general direction it came from via the ionosphere. Thus on 50-MHz in TX it is possible to get CA and FL from the south. Total path lengths may come toas high as 8 or 9,000 miles or more. Signals always exhibit a hollow or fluttery sound due to the multiple paths involved. Strengths may be 30 or 40 db below what a direct F2 path might provide. Backscatter does occur with Es but due to the lower layer heights, the range of distances is limited. Also due to the higher density of neutral atoms in the E-region, the more frequent electron collisions result in greater absorption and therefore weaker signals than with F2. With Es there has been noted direct backscatter from the ionization proper and not involving a ground reflection at a more distant point. 73, Pat WA5IYX/5
