ACARS
Airplanes regularly communicate their position and other data.Wireless and coded in a sort of short message. Beacause of its large height, a scanner easily makes this signal audible. The primary frequency in Europe is 131.725 MHz. (N-America 131.550 MHz, Pacific/Asia 131.550 MHz and Japan 131.450 MHz).

Often the term WACARS is used. Wacars refers to a Windows-program that decodes ACARS through a soundcard.
