More facts about Sarawak East MalaysiaSarawak, The land of the Hornbill is the largest state in Malaysia. Sarawak is covering an area of 124,449 square kilometers in North West of Borneo island. Borneo island is devide in a few different parts. Kalimantan is a state of Indonesia, Brunei is a mini state and is one of the richest countries in the world. Sabah and Sarawak are states of Malaysia. Sabah and Sarawak form East Malaysia (West Malaysia you will find on the main land between Singapore and Thailand). More then 2/3 of Sarawak land area is still covered in jungle. To day Malaysia is a member of: APEC, AsDB, ASEAN, C, CCC, CP, ESCAP, FAO, IMO, IMMARSAT, INTELSAT, INTERPOLE, IOC, ISO, ITU, MINURSO, NAM, OIC, UN, UNAVEM II, UNCTAD, UNESCO, UNIDO, UNIKOM, UNOMIL, UNOMOZ, UNOSOM, UNPROFOR, UPU, WCL, WFTU, WHO, WIPO, WMO, WTO. The population of Sarawak is about 2 million people. About 1/3 of the population are from the Iban Tribe (Sea Dayaks). In earlys day they where the main head hunters of Sarawak. About 1/3 of the population are chinese immigrants, who have the most and best trading positions in the country. About 1/5 of the population are Malay. About 1/5 of the population are from other local tribes, such as Bidayuh, Melanau, Kenyah, Kayan, Kelabits, Penan, Murut, ect. Malaysia economy is growing 7 to 8 percent a year (1994: National product real growth rate: 8.7 %). Export products ($56.6 billion in 1994) are crude oil, gas, thin, timber, wood products, palm-oil, rubber, eletronic devices/equipment, machinery and equipment, food, cars (Proton), Fruits, pepper, ect. It's a very stable country and have a very stable and growing economy (Inflation rate for 1994: 3.7%, Estimate for 1996: 2.5% the goverment try to bring the inflation down to a 0% but this will be not possible in 1996). In this booming economy you will find a lot of landareas, roads, ect, under construction. National product per capita for 1994 is estimated on $8,650.-. The main policy of the Malaysian goverment is to reach the middle industrialized country level in the year 2020. In the cities Miri and Tanjong Kidurong near Bintulu you can find a few big refineries. The Gas and Oil is coming from the oil/gas platforms in the South Chinese Sea. In 1998 714,000 people from all over the world visite Sarawak. Most of them will arrivle at Kuching Airport. This airport is about 15 minutes drive from Kuching Downtown area, if there is no traffic jam. Last year there was a big increase of visiters from Europe. The Dayaks selebrate the end of the riceseason. In the film "The Soul of the Rice" from W.R.Geddes it's show how important the Gawai festifal is, especially in the early day's.
