"EN ROUTE IN 1998"

In 1998 I was lucky to reach my 50th birthday. I decided to do something special. With permission of my XYL Ria I went to the beautiful South Pacific countries : Kingdom of Tonga and Western Samoa.

It really was an experience never to be forgotten. No rush hours except on the HF-bands, no papers/television/modern stress but extremely friendly people.

Between 21 October and 28 October 1998 I ,as A35XU, succeeded to make 1750 contacts from Tonga, divided in 1166 SSB, 485 CW, and 99 RTTY. For DXCC I contacted more than 100 entities. The exotic place I stayed was the KAHANA-resort.

This was my Tongan QTH

Over the period 29 October-8 November1998 I made 4426 QSO's as 5W0GD, of which 2847 were in SSB, 1354 in CW and 206 in RTTY. From Western Samoa too I made contacts with over 100 countries.

In Samoa I staid at the Samoan Village Resorts, 40 km from Apia, on the west side of Upolu island. The place is very quiet and it has a lot of space for all kind of antennas. You could use coconuts trees (20m high!) to install a 160m dipole for example. I would highly recommend this place as I saw other resorts during a tour of the island that didn't have such good possibilities to install antennas. Note that they use 117V and US plugs in this resort (with some voltage fluctuations but no problems with our switching power supply!), 240V otherwise in the rest of the island. The direct Fax number is 46098. Phone is 46028.

On the brink of leaving Western Samoa I met ATSU, 5W1SA (picture below).

We are still in touch...(August 7th, 99, 18 MHz SSB recording) as you can hear.
