What the CIA says about Nauru

The stay on NAURU has been special. First of all because of the island being the destination for boat refugees who were not allowed to enter Australia. Secondly the events in the United States on Sep 11th, 2001 attracted the world's attention. However being on a small island as Nauru the world is a big as you can see. No papers, no radio, no TV...So, the news about the disaster only became known 24 hours after the actual events...

For the radio part of the stay...After having to pay Aus$ 209 for the overweight on the leg Tarawa-Nauru soon the Ground Plane antenna was erected on top of the 'hotel's roof between the satelite dishes of press agencies; huge pile-ups; an OH- station that made 333 of the current DXCC list on 10 meters... Meeting C21DX (what a call !!) who runs an Internet cafe, but has no operational station; visiting with him C21RK; hardly any sleep; working US, JA HL and other countries on 75 meters; again no activity heard on 50 MHz; but after > 4800 QSO's the feeling to have done a good job. It was an experience not to be forgotten.
