Further to K5JL`s editorial comments in this months EME newsletter on a subject very close
to my heart, ie. activity levels or rather lack of I have made a few observations of my own.
I have been involved with 432 EME for a bit over 6 years & whilst this is hardly veteran
status I have been on for all NA & EU windows during 70 of the 73 activity weekends that have
been available during that time frame plus the usual contests. Although living 27 degrees
South of the equator does not put me in the thick of the action at all times never the less
I have a fair idea on what goes on due to the the fact that I am always there with station
wise a reasonable setup. The level of activity has now degenerated to the point where random
contacts on a month to month basis outside of contest dates is virtually non existent & the
reality is [were it not for the fact that this is all I want to do] that it is hardly worth
it. When I first started there were sometimes QRM problems even during a non contest weekend!
This is what I have heard /worked recently:
June - one sked only, nothing else.
May - two random.
April - one random.
In between a/w`s - nothing.
The previous months are much the same & all windows incl those in the middle of the night were
monitored. What has happened to all those stations, amplifiers, arrays etc? Have they been
pulled down or as I suspect just sitting there doing nothing? Has the novelty of it all simply
worn off? In this country there are at least two amateurs that I am in communication with who
are both cw operators & are both building 432 EME stations with a lot of push from myself but
now I am starting to feel guilty about it. It is a bit like the organisor of the Indianapolis
500 promoting expensive tickets knowing there will be only 6 cars turning up. I don`t buy into
the arguement that people have not got the time anymore or less time due to family & job
obligations. Nothing significant has changed in that regard to the majority of operators in
recent years & if you are really interested in something you will find time for it, there must
be other reasons. With digital modes you can download the program this morning & work someone
following moonbounce later the same day with a very small array mounted on a bit of rusty water
pipe outside the bedroom window with hardly any constructional or operator skills what so ever
& whilst all this is a wonderful invention & an advance in technology eventually I hope it never
dilutes all of the dedication, motivation & committment [mostly lacking in modern society] that
has been witnessed in years gone by within the EME fraternity as alluded to by Jay.
There have been some great stations created by virtue of the above ingredients. Probably I am
showing my age [59] somewhat but today more people are lazy, want to act like wise guys, instant
results, the quick buck, easy lifestyle etc. Looking forward to Trenton & the latest report on
what will be happening at the conference indicates it will be very worthwhile attending.

Hello Joe.
Just a word from here. Decided to stay at 432 this morning(local), in hope to get some
activity going!. Had a sked with OJ0/DL8YHR, but nothing heard, either in DL9KR(who worked
Frank) and SM2CEW`s skeds. Worked on random only SM2CEW and K2UYH. During all morning I
had complete 90deg lockout. Maybe this is the reason stations gave up on 432 Listen
randomly on 1296 and heard Howard. I expect to be on 1296 tommorow, but if any need me on
432 or 2304 too, I can easily switch around.
Will try to check in on the net later.

Hi Joe,
Fixed polarization rotator problem late last night.
Nothing definitive in sked with OJ0/DL8YHR... I have lots of birdiees
around .040. Caught Stig, OZ4MM (559/569) earlier. Otherwise 70 cm
quiet.
Will be on 432 tomorrow testing on JT65B with EA3DXU at 1130 on .054 and
2nd sked with OJ0.
Am interested in all and any skeds on 70 and 23 cm for tomorrow and later.
Registration for EME2004 is picking up!

K9BCT/M: not too much to report... been on 6 meters .. wide open .. SA and Eur.. hopes to
be home in a couple of hours and will look for Pacific..

VE4MA: t-staorms this morning.. did get stuff from Bruce for dish control .. has to send
interface back to US Digital for warranty work.. will not be on moon testing today..
hopes to be doing 47ghz tests by first of the week with AD6FP, W5LUA RW3BP, & VE7CLD
K6MYC: trip to YV0 is back on, will arrive on Island on July 29 for 8 days.. will be on
6 meters ter & EME moonrise/moonset .. 144.080 listening up 2 to 5 on EME .. 1 long
yagi on 2 meters 350w with some el.. will try to be on 20 meters as well on this

leaves, as he will not have internet connection on the Island.. will do mostly random

and Dave did detect signals but no contact..
WD5AGO: 2 meter E opened yesterday .. was on a bit. trying to get dish up on 23cm.. looking
for spectrum analyzer..
