Joseph,

Finally got the array fixed and everything seems to be okay what witht
he new rotators and indicating system.  Still trying to work out the
bugs.  Anyway, will look for other stations.  When I pulled apart the
coax lines, water rolled out of the connectors,  we have been having a
lot, lot of rain this summer and fall.  Anyway will try and listen
tonight.  Now all I have to do it get abattery foir this computer so
that the time will stay straight.

Subj:    JT44 Echoes on 1296
Date:   10/21/02 10:00:38 PM Eastern Daylight Time
From:   [email protected] (Al Katz)
To:     [email protected] (K1RQG)

Hi Joe,

I tried the new JT44 echo mode last night on 1296 and was amazed to see
my echoes with less that a watt of output power in the shack!  This was
with the moon at near apogee too.

I did observe some discrepancies in the Doppler shift indicated by the
program, but I did not read the instructions before trying it - I read
them afterwards.  Thus I did not follows Joe's instructions.  I left the
RIT box at 0 Hz and moved my receiver RIT to zero the echo frequency.  I
was interested in seeing the difference between the predicted echo
frequency and what was received.  The program automatically tries to
correct for the Doppler, so I was probably fighting with the program.
[You are suppose to enter your RIT setting so the program can account
for it. It is suggested that you set your RIT to the Doppler shift (for
large Doppler offsets) to insure that the echoes fall within the
receiver's audio passband.  Even taking this error into account, there
still seemed to be a significant difference between the observed and
predicted echoes.  I guess I need to do some additional experimentation
using the correct procedure.  Also I found that there was a significant
difference between the Doppler shift predicted in the EME mode and that
in the Echo mode.  I don't understand this, but will check again next
time I try.

It works fine,   have been hearing my echos just nice even in such bad
conditions as last night( helps to have the GMT clock set properly).
Echos's were loud for conditions and I am pleased.  The only thing wrong
with the system is the actuator motor is noisy.  Got to get that fixed,
but what the heck, I now have a HEAVY duty electric winch to raise and
lower the antenna, and 50 foot tower its mounted on so now its a piece
of cake.  Lots of rain here and both receive line connectors were
soaked  but everything is now working just great.  If Murphy doesn't
poke his head in the door this weekend, Ill be there.

Hi Joe,

I am planning to be QRV on 70cm this weekend for the contest. I have
been hearing my echoes OK the last couple of weeks.
I had to rebuild most of the electronics due to a lightning hit in April
and I was down for several months.
My station consists of a FT-847 Yaesu exciter, TE Systems amp driving a
Lunar Link LA-70B power amp ~ 1.5 KW into eight
33 element FO-33 type yagis. The preamp is a Cavity Type using a HEMT.

About two weekends ago, I picked up an old Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. Dish
Positioner (Turn-table type). I think this should make a fine azimuth
control for my 20 foot dish. It will handle a Maximum axial load of
10,000 Lbs.

I have got a computer on order, XP-2000 type, that should be fast enough
to run the EME version of JT-44 software. I should have it in a couple
of weeks.

Cowles, K4EME

Subj:    EME Beacon
Date:   10/24/02 12:00:42 AM Eastern Daylight Time
From:   [email protected] (Al Katz)
To:     [email protected] (K1RQG)

Joe,

Please pass the word that the SETI 1296 EME beacon is back in operation.
No change in format, power, etc. from before.

Also note that the new version of JT44 indicates the mutual Doppler
between stations (to other station grid) in the EME mode.  This is why I
observed a difference in the Doppler shift indicated by the EME and Echo
modes.

Hi Guys

Well here I am again sitting in the shack at 2.13 am local all full of expectation
that this time I will hear 23 cm signals off the moon. But alas not a chirp, key click
or dickie bird was heard. I will not give up though even if my wife pronouces me mad
for I am the intrepid ham or should I say dumb F that sits here for hours checking
windows of opportunity and tuning the 475 back and forth between
1296 and 1296.50. Not only does my wife reckon that I am mad but EME is some
figment of my immagination to deprive her of serious shopping money.
If only I could say come and listen to this signal off the moon, some very faint morse
that neither of us would understand that well (my morse being as rusty as hell) I am
sure it would impress the S out of her and redeem me.
Seriously though if I was to hear some signals this contest I would be more inclined to
install the 700w tx gear up on the dish.I have been spot listening for two months with
only 2 faint morse signals so I hold great hopes for more on 1296 this contest.

System here in ZL at this stage is recieve only and under test.

6.000 dish
Modified seacat missle launcher for rotation. (4.0 tons)
W2IMU feed
DB6NT preamp NF .4db  Gain 20 db on probe
DB6NT 1296 to 144 xvter with 100 mm low loss to preamp
7/8 heliax 40.000 to shack
Transceiver is IC 275H

Results   15 db sun noise
               .75 db Sag A
              2 faint sigs off moon.

 Have a great contest guys
