May 21st 2000, the first 'Day of the radio amateur' was a fact. After a long preparationtime and the efforts of many our club WLD participated in this event so people outside our hobby could come and see what those strange guys and girls are doing with all those technical gizmos and large antennas.

Instead of using our club 'shack' we opted for a recreational area a few kilometers away. The owner of restaurant 'de Lekkerbek' in Waasmunster let us use a part of his restaurant for the exhibition.

On saturdayafternoon we started to prepare everything. Antennas for HF and VHF/UHF had to be put up and part of the equipment installed.

After assembling the VHF/UHF antenna it was fixed to the drainpipe.

For HF we used a vertical and a FD-4 wire antenna.

The room was filled with visitors

After weeks of warm sunny weather, as a typical example of Murhy's law, it rained all day on sunday. In spite of that we had loads of visitors. Of course, everyone had to stay indoors and the hot air ballon that was to be one of the highlights of the day was not able to participate. However, the 4 balloonflights that were to be won that day will be flown at a later date.

This event also got some media coverage. The 'open day' was featured in a few newspapers and also on the Belgian national public radio station Radio 2 (VRT)
