My City

I live in the beautiful city of Vienna - it is very famous for its music and the historical buildings. Let´s have a quick look around:

GRABEN

Walking on this boulevard can be quite expensive, lots of shops means a lot to see. In the picture you see the so called “Pestsäule”- built in the middle ages as a thanksgiving for the victory against the illness of plague. If you go straight on you reach the ...

STEPHANSDOM (St. Stephen's Cathedral)

In the center of the city rises the 137-meter-high “Steffl” (343 steps to the top inside), the south tower of Gothic St. Stephen's Cathedral.. If you would go inside this impressive edifice, you would learn its secrets. The Stephansdom is one of the most important sights of Vienna.

RIESENRAD (Giant Ferris Wheel)

For more than 100 years, the Giant Ferris Wheel makes its leisurely turns in the Vienna Prater. It was closed only during World War II. Whether you want to visit this Vienna landmark while walking in the footsteps of the "Third Man," or simply want to enjoy the view of the city from a height of nearly 65 meters - if you haven't taken a ride on the Riesenrad, you haven't really been in Vienna!

HOFBURG - HELDENPLATZ  (Viennese Imperial Palace)

Meeting point of the German Kings and Roman Emperors from the 15th to the beginning of the 19th century. Its front was built in the “Renaissance” time by P. Ferrabosco. Inside you can see the treasury and the stables of the very well known white horses - so called “Lippizaner”. They are famous because of the tricks which they fulfil at the “Spanish Riding School”.

KARLSKIRCHE

This most impressive church of the Barock century was built between 1716 and 1722 by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and finished 1723 bis 1739 by his son Joseph Emanuel. The huge dome which is 72 meters high is one of the Viennese highlights.

SCHLOSS SCHÖNBRUNN         (Schönbrunn Palace)

The former imperial summer residence of the Habsburgs, with its numerous attractions, is worth a visit. Inside there are about 40 imperial rooms showing court life during the era of Empress Maria Theresia. Those who admire Austria's beautiful Empress "Sissi" will find great moments in the rooms in which she once lived.

RINGSTRASSE (The Ring)

Stroll along Vienna's splendid boulevard and admire it as a window on the former Habsburg monarchy. In 1857, the city wall and its bastions were razed, and during the following years this splendid grand boulevard encircling the city was created. Take a typical horse taxi, so called “Fiaker”, and simply enjoy the ride - there are lots of sights to see -  government buildings, private mansions, spacious squares and parks, monuments and elegant cafés... see Otto Wagner's Post Office Building, the Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna's City Park, the Vienna State Opera, the Imperial Palace, the Museums of Fine Arts and Natural History, Parliament, the Burgtheater, the University, the Stock Exchange and much more ...

... for example the monument of the king of the waltz - the very famous Austrian musician Johann STRAUSS. 1999 was the year of the 100th anniversary of the death of Johann Strauss junior, and the 150th anniversary of the death of his father.

If you stand right there for a long enough time, you will see Strauss start playing ....

BELVEDERE

Prince Eugen von Savoyen (1663-1736), the 'Noble Knight' and fieldmarshall, had Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt build this garden palace as a summer residence before the gates of the (then) city of Vienna. The mansion, which is considered one of the most beautiful baroquebuildings in the world, was acquired by the House of Habsburg after Prince Eugen's death.

DONAU (Danube river)

Vienna is built on the sides of the Danube river - in the seventies there was built an island right in the middle of the river where Viennese people join their spare time with sports, as well as visiting one of the numerous pubs in the evening. On the right edge of the picture you can see the “Danube Tower”.

Now we finished the short walkaround through my city - if you want to see more of it, you will have to visit Vienna yourself !
