Amateur radio operators in the USA are licenced by the FCC . Hams need to pass a series of exams to get their licences. Different types of licences give the amateur different privileges in how they can use the amateur frequency bands. Most licences include a morse code test ranging from an easy 5 words per minute for the Novice to a more difficult 20 words per minute for the Extra Class licencees. Ham radio tests are now given by amateurs themselves who are appointed by the FCC ; questions come from a pool which are available for study to the Hams. There is a code-free license which only gives privileges in the Very High Frequency bands, useful for mostly local communications but that still affords lots of fun...
