CONTINENTAL DIVIDE TRAIL  -  NEW MEXICO
GPS AND LOCATION INFORMATION FOR TRAIL ACCESS POINTS
Anticipated use
This definitive information on how to reach/find the trail in a vehicle at various points should be useful 1) to those hiking the trail in segments, and 2) to those wanting to stash (or arrange for drops) of water and/or supplies.  It may also be useful to hikers who must call for emergency assistance and thus need to know 1) where the need go to be picked up, and 2) access directions to be relayed to those trying to reach them.  This was not developed to be a primary source of information about the trail or the trail's location.
Use with maps and with the Continental Divide Trail Associations detailed trail GPS information
Reference to appropriate maps will be required to make effective use of this information.  Referencing CDTA's trail GPS information and companion map book will also be helpful.
Accuracy
While believed to be correct, no warrantee is made regarding the accuracy or usefulness of this information.  Users assume all risks associated with use of this informmation.  Please send updates, corrections, verifications, road conditions and comments to R H Clark at  nm5rc at arrl.net.   This information will be periodically updated as new information and field verifications becomes available.
Private Lands
Where possible public roads were selected for access.  Some lesser used roads cross private lands and road ownership is not known.  Being listed here does not convey any right to enter or cross private lands.
South to north direction
The information is presented in a south to north direction, i.e., starting at Mexico-USA border and proceeding to New Mexico-Colorado border.
Point reference numbers
The point reference numbers increase from south to north, are arbitrary, and have no relationship to any official trail information.  The use of decimals allows the easy insertion and deletion of points and information, as well as resorting of portions or all of the information.  A reverse sort of the points will place the information in a north-south direction, but care will be required to interpret the information.  Some points are given two numbers to allow them to appear in proper sequence in the listing (where this is done, the other numbers are shown as "aka" (also known as)).
CDTA Trail GPS reference numbers
The actual GPS point where vehicle access to the trail is listed in this information has been cross referenced to the corresponding CDTA's 2011 trail GPS points and maps and those point numbers are provided in for quick reference.  In comparing these points, the user will find they do not exactly match due to the accuracy limitations of my GPS unit and to the actual location where I was standing verses where CDTA's mapper was standing.
Verified status
Entries under the 'Verified' column mean:  yes = lat/lon/elevation verified by actual field readings and referenced roads have been driven.     no = lat/lon/elevation from maps and other sources and not yet been field verified.
Excel file
This information is in a MS Excel file.  Leaving it in this format allows the user to easily manipulate and change the information for their own use.  The concern with providing the information in this format is the information may get changed and passed on to others and not be as accurate or useful as it might be.  Users are encouraged to obtain their own copy of this information from the web site.

467.00 Note re CDT from 464.00 to 471.00 is in process of minor rerouting Canjilon FS office (2009) maps show current minor planned route changes with plans to have new trail segments constructed by 2012.  New route will be constructed in segments thru 2012.  Primary change will be near 471.00 (see 471.00 note for notes re CDT in that area).  CDTA trail maps and GPS points reflect the old route between these points.
469.00 FS559 (aka Hwy 110), FS129 intersection; access to CDT at 471.00, 482.00 and 466.80 36.5200 106.3361 8910 yes FS559 E-W, FS129 N.  Drive E 2.3 miles on maintained two track 559 to CDT at 471.00.  Drive N 4.8 miles on paved FS129 to end of 129 to CDT at 482.00.  See 466.50 for access to CDT at 466.80.

472.00 Note 1  re CDT route between 471.00 and 488.00 See 471.00 note.  Canjilon FS 2009 maps show CDT to be routed N from 471.00 to the N end of FS129 at N end of Canjilon Lakes at 482.00 which is ~ 1 W of the CDTA trail maps and GPS points.  If not yet completed (early 2011), route may be flagged.
472.10 Note 2  re CDT route between 471.00 and 488.00 The FS 2009 planned (maybe marked by early 2011?) CDT for ~ 3.5 miles N of Canjilon Lakes at 482.00 to CDTA trail GPS # 29_075M is N from 482.00 on existing trail.  Early 2012 marking status?
472.20 Note  3  re CDT route between 471.00 and 488.00 The 2009 planned FS CDT route between the CDTA trail GPS # 29_075M and # 29_160XX crosses back and forth across the CDTA trail map/GPS route with several variations of nearly 1 mile.  Construction/marking status as of early 2011?
472.30 Note  4   re CDT route between 471.00 and 488.00 The CDTA trail map and GPS points apparently concide with the FS's final planned route between CDTA trail GPS # 29_160XX and 29_213RR.
472.40 Note  5  re CDT route between 471.00 and 488.00 The CDTA trail map and GPS points show the CDT is a SE road walk on CR 450 (0.3 miles) from 483.00 (aka CDTA trail GPS # 29_213RR) to intersection of FS91B and CR 450 at 483.50 (aka CDTA trail GPS # 29_216RL) then a 6.2 mile roadwalk N on FS 91B to US Hwy 64 at 486.00 (aka CDTA trail GPS # 278RL).  The 2009 Canjilon FS maps show the CDT will be rerouted parallel to FS91B passing along the east bank of Hopewell Lake and endng at 488.00 (aka CDTA trail GPS # 29_283AP and # 30_300AP).  Some of this reroute is planned for construction in 2011 via two CDTA projects.
482.00 CDT at N end of FS129 at N Canjilon Lake 36.5637 106.3279 10130 yes Current signed CDT is a mile +- E of here.  Planned CDT will depart to N on existing trail for ~ 3.5 miles (see 472.00 note).

486.00 CDT at US 64-FS91B intersection; aka 502.00 and CDTA trail GPS # 29_278RL 36.7036 106.2355 9810 yes CDT from W to S.  US 64 milepost 204.1.

501.00 FROM US 64 NEAR HOPEWELL LAKE TO N NEW MEXICO STATE LINE AT HWY 17 AT CUMBRES PASS N ending point for this info is actually ~2 miles into Colorado since there is no vehicle access to the CDT at the state line.
501.50 Note re CDTA trail map/GPS points The 2011 CDTA trail maps and GPS points appear to be along the 2009 FS planned route from US Hwy 64 north 18 miles to Lower Lagunitas Lake.  From Lower Lagunitas Lake north 19 miles to the NM-CO border the CDTA GPS points appear to have been collected prior to 2009 since they do not reflect some of the actual final route I found in 2009 and the several CDTA trail construction projects since then.
