About NJ2DX

I was first licensed as a Novice on October 18, 1988 with the call sign of KB2GLO. I became a Technician less than a month later on November 15, 1988. Then a couple of years later on May 22, 1990 I upgraded to General. I am currently an Advanced class operator and have been such since October 15th, 1991. One of these days I may upgrade to Extra but I need to get motivated with studying and using morse code. Any suggestions are welcomed!

My elmer was Karl Koemm WT2T (formerly KC2WU) who has been a silent key for many years after a fatal motorcycle accident. I met Karl through the Holmdel Amateur Radio Club at Bell Laboratories in Holmdel, NJ. He helped me get my novice ticket and I attended a General class he presented for the Jersey Shore Amateur Radio Society. Karl was an excellent mentor and elmer and I strive to follow in his foot steps! If we don't want bad operators on our bands we must not forget to elmer the new comers of our hobby!

When the FCC announced the opening of gate 3 of the Vanity call sign program I could not resist getting a new call and was issued NJ2DX on September 17th, 1997.

Station location

My station is located in Toms River, New Jersey USA. Toms River is in Ocean County and my grid square is FM29 since the latitude is 39N58 and longitude is 74W12. I am about 10 miles in land from the Atlantic Ocean at 35 feet above sea level. My CQ zone is 5 and ITU zone is 8.

Club memberships

I am president of the Holmdel Amateur Radio Club (HOARC) which is a club of people that work at AT&T and Lucent in Monmouth County NJ. I am also a member of the Jersey Shore Amateur Radio Society (JSARS) . Besides those local clubs I' am also a member of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), Mobile Amateur Radio Awards Club (MARAC) member # R2814, Six Meters World Wide member # 275 and Ten-Ten International Net member # 52519.

Current Equipment

HF rig: ICOM IC-725 (base), ICOM IC-706 (mobile), 2m/70cm rig: Kenwood TM-731A (mobile), 2m HT: Kenwood TH-215A (portable), Base HF antenna: G5RV, Antenna tuner: MFJ-949C, Mobile antenna: Hustler HF resonators, various Larsen NMO mounted and 10 meter converted CB mag mount, Digital: AEA PK-232MBX multi mode and PacComm Tiny 2 TNC.

I'm also known to operate at the club station of K2DR which is the call sign for the Holmdel Amateur Radio Club.

Favorite frequencies, nets and repeaters

10 meters: 28.345 & 28.425 MHz looking for Ten-Ten contacts, County Hunting nets on 14.336 MHz or 7.238 MHz. 2 meters: 145.675 MHz simplex with 127.3 Hz tone and other local repeaters, 70 cm: 445.075 MHz -5MHz 141.3 PL repeater in Manahawkin NJ linked with 449.525 MHz -5MHz 141.3 PL repeater in Neptune NJ as well as some other local repeaters.

Favorite modes of operation

My favorite mode is SSB on 10 meters maybe this is why I enjoy collecting all those 10-10 numbers and awards including 10-10 affiliated chapters. However since most of my operating is while mobile you'll often find me on 2 meter FM simplex and repeaters as well as some 70 cm repeaters. However my most active HF mode lately has been county hunting. Since most of my operating time is while I'm mobile I've found the mobile county hunting nets to be alot of fun!

Favorite contests

My favorite contests are the ARRL sweepstakes both CW and Phone and 10-10 contests and I try to operate them as often as I can.
