LCARA DISCUSSION GROUP
I created a Yahoo Discussion Group for LCARA activities to serve
as an alternate way to contact people. It can be used to
distribute announcements about work parties, exercises, special events
and whatever else that comes up. Only those members who choose to
subscribe will get the messages but hopefully enough will to make it
useful. It is intended to be an alternative way to get messages
out to those who can't monitor the club repeater regularly.
Yahoo Groups are free email distribution lists that "broadcast"
individual email messages to all group members. Anybody who signs
up for the LCARA Group will be able to send messages to all subscribers
of the group by sending one email message. This will allow any
subscriber to send a message to all subscribers without knowing each
individual email address.
Spam is always a concern, so it is set up so only subscribers to the
group can send a message and applications for group subscription have
to be approved. In addition, there is one critical step in
creating a Yahoo account that must be followed to eliminate spam from
Yahoo itself and their advertisers. When you create a Yahoo
account you can set your "Marketing Preferences" to not allow them to
send you marketing email. If you have an existing Yahoo account
and you aren't sure how to do this, email me and I will send you
instructions.
Since I set my "Marketing Preferences" to "No Mail" I haven't received
any spam I can attribute to Yahoo, as long as group membership requires
moderator approval. If the group is open for anybody to join
without approval spammers can join and send spam to the group just like
any other message, but that is why I set the group up to require
approval for subscriptions.

Please identify yourself (either by name or call sign) on the
application so I'll know who you are. The approval process is
simply to keep spammers out, so as soon as I see you have made
application I will approve it. Please allow a little time for me
to get the notice of application in case I'm not at my computer when
you sign up.
