Helping amateur radio operators learn, solve and enjoy!

What qualifies me to be able to offer you technical help?

I took electronics theory in college, with a focus on communications and design. While never having held a public job in the field, with the exception of being a radio DJ for a few months, my hobbies have pretty much centered around electronics. I was able to be one of the first Radio Shack employees to get to mess around with a "Trash-80" (the TRS-80) computer, and I say mess around because NONE of us knew what to do with it. And, like a lot of ham radio operators, I was a "CB'er" before I became a ham.

Part of my life, I worked in my own business as a licensed master electrician, with a focus on residential home wiring with specialties, such as telephone, computer, and home entertainment wiring. The last job I held before I became disabled was a maintenance supervisor of a local nursing home. There I not only did electrical, but mechanical, heat and air, plumbing, as well as servicing and repair in medical and dietary machinery. Many of those devices have advanced electronic control circuitry, which put my college education to good use.

I am an Amateur Extra class operator. I got my first license in 1976 with call WD4AXH while still in high school, but let it expire because I was too busy with college later. In 1999, I decided to get back into amateur radio, and passed my Technician License at the Dalton GA Field Day, and received call KF4ZHD. From then I moved to Tech Plus, then General with call NA4IT, then Amateur Extra.

What can I do for you?

Well, first and foremost, I don't know the answer to every question. But, I believe that my purpose can be this; to help you discover the answer to your technical question, while help you learn more about the project you are undertaking. In the amateur radio realm, my "specialties" if there are some, are:

  1. Sound card digital modes, including packet radio, PSK31, SSTV, RTTY, the new "Digital SSTV", MT-63, Olivia, and others. I love exploring those modes, and building interfaces.
  2. Packet Radio and APRS with TNC's, including the TNC-X.
  3. Winlink 2000 with packet radio.
  4. Repeater building and repair.
  5. Power systems with battery backup.
  6. Mobile Communications units.
  7. Amateur radio software.
  8. Other....................
Does this mean if you contact me and ask me about a sound card interface I will build you one? NO! Does it mean if you have a repeater problem I will travel to your site and fix it? NO! BUT, I will try to point you in the right direction by helping you research the answer. Will I charge for this service? NO! I may point you to a web resource, a book resource, email information to you, or point you to someone I know who is better qualified by their experience to answer your question. I didn't learn what I know by myself, I had help! (;-)

How can you contact me?

Well, I prefer email the best. Why? Because you can send me a detailed description of the advice you need. And, my writing is horrible! But, please do not send large files via email without my prior consent. I am on dial up. The email address to use is  . Be sure to use a good subject line, such as "Technical Help Needed".
