Do as I say, not as I do.

[pre_amp-7]

Overview - The receive pre-amplifier is mounted on the front of the card, out of the way of the RF amplifier sections.  There is normally a shield over the entire pre-amplifier circuit, but was removed for the pictures.

Overview - RF input is on the left, output is on the right, DC power is on the top.

[pre_amp-2]

DC power section.  The blue power wire is wrapped through a ferrite bead.  The 10 µF capacitor should not be used if you want to power the pre-amplifier only during the receive cycle.

[pre_amp-3]

Closeup - You can see the RF input protection diodes on the left.  The diodes are in a series arrangement, surface mount package and were taken from an old MMDS downconverter.  You should also note that the diodes are on the wrong side of the DC blocking capacitor!  Make sure when you build yours to place the diodes after the blocking capacitor or the PIN diode bias will be send straight to ground.

[connect-3]

Tap the PIN diode bias to power the pre-amplifier only during the receive cycle.
