Just hit my inbox.. Doug "News Release MDS iNET 900* approved under FCC Part 15 rules. Approval clears the way for sales of industrial-grade wireless IP/Ethernet solution. Rochester, NY, February 11, 2002: Microwave Data Systems (MDS), a world leader in industrial wireless networking solutions with applications in the SCADA/telemetry, telecommunications, and online transactional markets, today announced the approval of its new MDS iNET 900 IP/Ethernet solution under FCC Part 15 rules. The approval affirms the license-free status of the spread spectrum device, clearing the way for sales of the product. The iNET 900 is designed for secure, long range (up to 30 miles) voice, video, data transmissions in industrial IP/Ethernet environments. Its higher speed and long range allow remote site monitoring providing an inexpensive and reliable means of conducting video surveillance of sensitive areas such as public water supplies and utility installations. These links can be established rapidly, without the need for installing expensive coaxial cable between monitoring sites and protected areas. Other key applications include the exchange of mission-critical and revenue generating data with fixed assets such as oil and gas wells, pipelines, fluid storage tanks, compressor stations, and utility meters. In addition, the product supports mobile and drive-up acquisition of data, allowing previously "hard to obtain" business critical information to be brought onto corporate networks in real time. This is pretty much understandable owing to the EU regulatory situation which mandates high bit rates in the license-free spread- spectrum bands. (This may change.) AMI waveplex probably not being the best choice for 802.11 ! The FCC rules are different and permit low data-rate DSSS links and so products of this nature appear more prevalent in the USA. The flexibility of waveplex is much more suited to these applications. Plus the US-only 900MHz ISM band is more usable for longer-range links than 2.4GHz. I'd like to know of any products or suppliers you might have come across that use AMI waveplex chipsets. eg. SX061, SX043... the chips all have "waveplex" and the logo on top. I'd like to get some kind of handle on how well-used the AMI chipsets actually are, and what kind of markets they're in. How long do we think AMI will continue active support for waveplex chips, and is there demand for a compatible future device - of course the AMI salesman always smiles! If anyone lurking is designing with waveplex I'd be interested in getting some contacts. Forming an ad-hoc user-group might be in our mutual interest. eg. in dealing with the upgrade path and obsolescence issues of waveplex-based designs, down to non-conformity issues with individual batches of chips. The AMI seemd like a nice enough part, but yea I too got the feeling they don't sell a lot of them.
