At that time he wasn't really considering a Spartan II board, but next thing I hear it's shipping! I emailed a few other places six months ago and some said they wouldn't do a Spartan board because it wasn't support by the Xilinx Student Edition. The context of the message was that the 2.1 Student Edition may have a better VHDL synthesis engine than the Webpack. The Student Edition has FPGA Express. The WebPack has Xilinx's own XST ("Xilinx Synthesis Technology" from memory.), which is not as good (I think). I suppose Synopsys wasn't interested in giving FE away, not surprisingly. I wonder if they have a 3.1 Student Edition. Confusingly, our Alliance 3.1i package at work came with a Synplify demo CD!
